Hello, I am new to this site, & hopefully someone can help me.
I have been going to a psychiatrist for several years now, to get help with depression / anxiety.
The doctor limits me to a 15 minute session every few months, which are not nearly long enough, then gives me a script for two meds. which help little to not at all.
The reason that I say 15 minutes is not nearly long enough, is because this doctor does not have the full scope of my past history, which dates back over 40 years & how long I have been having problems, including family history.
This is the second doctor in as many years, & they don't seem to care.
I recently got laid off from my job, & my anxiety / depression has intensified.
If I did not have a wife to emotionally support me, I doubt I would be alive.
My question is, are there any other professionals out there other than a psychiatrist, who can write scripts for meds., & would take more than 15 minutes to get to know me & some of my history?
If I went to a psychologist, can they write scripts for meds.?
I lost my insurance, yet I do have some money to pay for services.
I am just sick of psychiatrist who don't really care.
Thanks for any help.

A therapist would be better if you are looking for someone to talk about your problems with.
Psychiatrists help with the med side of things. It's good to have both. Maybe ask your psychiatrists if he/she could refer you to therapist and they could work together on you. At least that's how I found my therapist.

Therapists aren't usually that expensive so also going to one shouldn't be too much.

I see a psychiatrist, who prescribes my meds, and a therapist for talk therapy. My current therapist is a LISW, but I had a psychologist, before him. Didn't your psychiatrist recommend therapy, at some point?

Both psychiatrists I've employed gave me all the time as I needed, up to 1.5hrs. Of course I has to pay, but I'm many cases it was less than a therapists. I also had their bat numbers so if I was in crisis I could get help. They set the bar quite high. The first one I finally allowed to retire because I found the second one. But now the second one moved to MT and I'm in crisis at a loss. I'm tempted to call my first one, I know he would take pity on me, but I don't want to abuse the privelage.

You need to demand what you need. You are the paying customer. I also have been in therapy for 20+ years so I've written a history and give it to the psychiatrist before or on the first session. I expect them to read it and be familiar with my history, or I walk out.
