Hello,
This is my first post here. I'm a 50 year old male and for the last couple Years I've been waking up from sleep and I can't breath. I Jump out of bed and run to the door to get fresh air. Two nights ago This woke me up three times. Last night I fell asleep on the coach and I woke up couldn't catch my breath and thought I was having a heart attack. Trip to the ER, heart Test and blood work fine and home I went. I do suffer from gert but Dr. Believes I'm having anxiety/panic attacks. Said I should try Serotonin. My son takes medication for ADHD And I've wondered if I was undiagnosed as a Child & a possible connection. I find it all confusing with the multiple Options of conditions to consider and that None of Doctors I've seen can tell me Much other than my heart is good. Anyone have this waking up out of breath Condition and possible ideas/possibilities ? |

Hi, welcome to PC
![]() Have they done any sleep studies on you? That might help with working out what is and isn't going on as well |

well most likely you were stressed from the previous day and then you had nightmares. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a startled yell, sit up straight but then I close my eyes and go back to sleep. When you're having a panic attack you might feel the need to "escape" or get out of the room, like how you said you went outside, but it is important to resist this urge. When you are rushing it gives your body a "heads up" that this is a dangerous situation, when in fact you were just lying in your own bed! Then, your body will release more stress chemicals to help "fight the danger". Do talk to your doctor about your concerns. But until then, assume that the physical symptoms are only manifestations of pent up anxiety. Best of luck to you!

Sleep apnea and acid reflux can cause that. I have GERD and it used to wake me up abruptly. It felt like I could not breath and was choking. It stopped once I avoided eating big meals 3 to 4 hours before bed.

Same happens to me if I eat late at night ....I wake up from acid in my throat choking me!
Do you eat late at night? Maybe write down what you ate the day before when it happens and see if a certain food is causing it? Good luck!

Thanks all for taking time to reply and explain
Your situation and thoughts. I've booked appt. with my Dr. For a sleep study test For sleep apnea. I've a feeling it's something To do with the GERD and I've just started going Back to taking Tecta everyday to see if that Helps. I'm anxious to go to bed every night As I fear waking up again. I woke up twice Last night jumping out of bed for air. |

Sleep apnea will cause you to stop breathing for so long that your brain will bring you alert to get you breathing again. I frequently wake up gasping or otherwise feeling like I've run a race, with a pounding heart and flooded with adrenaline, but I am never able to remember if I was having a bad dream or if something startled me awake.
Good luck getting to the bottom of this. Let us know how it turns out, okay? Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk |

I stop breathing at night. I've had different doctors tell me different things.
1. asthma 2. anxiety 3. acid reflux 4. sleep apnea 5. early stages of COPD The Dr who said it was sleep apnea wanted to send me to a sleep clinic, but I didn't go. So I'm not sure which dx was correct, but all of them can cause it (according to the Drs I've seen). It is scary to say the least, and probably something you'd want to get checked out! Stay safe! |

I went to Dr. & it's a mystery why I wake
Up like this. I've taken sleeping pills every night And have slept well since. Right now I'm Going to take the sleeping pills for awhile And go from there. Feels good to be rested And I'm not anxious going to bed |

Must feel great to finally get some rest, good for you! Probably anxiety at the root of it. Good luck!
