I'm suffering from social anxiety and I don't know what to do anymore.
I've been on anti-depressants for about 2 years (Lexapro) but I think they may have stopped working as in recent months my anxiety is back. It was originally health anxiety but now seems to be social anxiety. It's getting to the stage where I dread social interaction and I long to be normal. I tried CBT, but I just wasn't sure it was for me. I only went to one session, but she told me to record my thoughts and after the session I couldn't pinpoint thoughts, just feelings of anguish around social situations, so I didn't go back. I feel so uncomfortable around people, to the point I'll only see them if alcohol is involved so I can relax. Can anyone relate, or help in anyway? I feel like I'm going insane. |

Hello Eleny,
I'm sorry to hear about the way you feel. I have suffered with social anxiety pretty much all my life and i can understand how you feel. I advise against drinking alcohol because it can lead to abuse way easier than you might think. Did you hear about grounding methods? If yes, did you try any? Change comes with little steps. You shouldn't push yourself to hard but improving oneself is a constant process. It takes lots of work, determination and commitment but i promise you it's worth it! I would like to talk more with you, if you ever need any advice or just someone to talk to, you can message me. Stay strong, you're not alone! ![]()

Hi Eleny,
Social anxiety is a very real experience. If you didnt feel comfortable in CBT my suggestion would be to seek help elsewhere. It's also important to remember that it takes a while to build trust with any therapist especially under conditions of social anxiety. I wish you well!! |

Have you considered a slow exposure to being around people? For me the grocery store was where I first practised this. I started going first thing in the morning then a half hour later EVERY day. I can now go at anytime of day.
Another exposure I did was the coffeeshop. Same thing, going midday then graduating to the busiest time of day. At the same time, my therapist instructed me to take a seat and stay for progressively longer times. I was luck, she came with me a few times to bo the the grocery store and coffee shop. Anyway, the point is, that you find a place with lots of different sorts of people and gradually increase the time you spend with them and the numbers. I still have my troubles sometimes. I have found having something in my hand - like a cup of coffee - really gives me some comfort. |
