I'm taking classes which has a group discussion as part of curriculum. I'm nervous for this because I don't like to it for many reasons. One, because I had a bad anxiety/panic attack at a previous one and I cannot seem to forget it. During that attack, everywhere I looked I saw people all around me and I didn't know what to do or what to look at. So my question is: during a group discussion, I want to pay attention to the speaker, but I get nervous when I feel uncomfortable and make eye contact. I am nervous because I don't want to appear nervous, but the more I try, the more it gets worse. any suggestions? I hope this is clear.

Don't make eye contact if it makes you nervous.

I draw during class when I'm nervous. Maybe it seems a little rude, but it releases my nervous energy and keeps me calm enough to function.

If looking down at your toes all class keeps you calm, do it.

It's funny, last week, on my second day of class, I had a really bad day, and spent my whole art class silent as a mouse, staring down at my desk the entire time, fidgeting like crazy After class, I apologized to my teacher for not participating and for being so hyper. He was totally confused! I was in this little eight-person class, and he hadn't noticed my weird behavior at all!!

So it just goes to show, even when you FEEL like everyone is looking at you, thinking your a freak -- you're really NOT that interesting. XD

Hello Serenity. I usually look to the left or to the right of the person speaking if at all possible. I am also a good note taker and that usually takes the anxiety out of looking at any one person when I am busy taking notes. I hope the anxiety gets better in time for you. Take care and good day.
