G'day,
I'll bet you're all sick and tired of seeing me around here so I'll try to keep this one short. I want to know if anyone else has problems watching shows like CSI or Law and Order or any other show with violence / disturbing themes in them? I ask this because last night I was watching Elephant (the movie about the school shooting) with my friends - they made me watch it with them I have a question - and I nearly had a nervous breakdown I through it. I used to love those blood and gore movies but now I can't even bring myself to watch some tv shows like The Practice. So yes, is there anyone else out there that also has this incapacity for seeing violence on tv or is it just me?

Hi, Ozze. Yes, I find that I used to be able to watch ANYTHING and now I cover my eyes with my hands. Cannot, cannot, cannot watch a Quentin Tarantino movie at all. It's like my sensitivity to violence and gore has been ramped up along with my anxiety so it's much more uspetting.
Feel like a wuss, really.

Ozze:

I bet nobody is sick of you. So ask away. The answer to this question, for me, is I feel the same way. I love scary movies, or should say LOVED..now I can't watch them. Too much death and violence.

So you're not alone.

Take Care.

I know this is an old thread, but I never check out this forum generally. I came here to read your posts, Ozze, since you mentioned them to me. I just thought I would chime in here and share my own experience.

I've always been a wimp when it comes to scary movies. But this summer it got a LOT worse. I had been dealing with some pretty scary memories (of physical abuse) and feeling much like I did as a child sometimes. One day (middle of the day) I was watching the movie "The Sixth Sense" with my roommate. You know the part where it's late at night and the little boy hears a dead woman yelling at her husband in his kitchen or something like that? Anyway, the sound of the woman yelling PANICKED me. I was TERRIFIED. I had to have my roommate turn the sound way down, and I buried my head in my pillows and put my hands tightly over my ears so I couldn't see or hear anything. I just wanted to cry my eyes out. I was so afraid. My heart was pounding and I could hardly breathe. I have a question I felt like such a baby. I was acting like a 5 year old! lol

So yeah I can relate, lol I have a question

Angela

I think CSI is a great show, I do get triggered from it from time to time especially if it's to do with abuse, rape ect.

I think that alot of people can get easily triggered by this , if it's to do with that kind of thing or another. Stuff from those kinds of shows can also trigger anxiety and also depression.

It happens to me. Sometimes I'm more okay than others, but never a 100%. I can even get emotional just reading an article about violence. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Ozze}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Sometimes the news gets to me, but it's usually movies that really trigger me. In fact, there are regular "disagreements" with certain members of my family regarding movie rentals. If not for my husband's support, I don't know what I would do. My aunt, particularly, will become quite upset if she doesn't get her way about what to rent when she visits. She'll continue to complain, and to say nasty things to me about me not letting them rent movies that I know will trigger me. The Road To Perdition was the latest.

I can watch monster movies for hours -- at least, the old ones, the newer ones are too gory -- but anything that involves a person doing something, like a hit man, will set me off. Nightmares, anxiety, etc. So, since I know that I can't watch that sort of thing, I just don't.

Thank god for my husband. He doesn't fully understand, but he accepts that it's true, and he does his best to protect me. I'm very fortunate to have him.

CSI and Law & Order don't seem to trigger me, I think because they're both well written. I did see a few minutes of "Walker, Texas Ranger" once, though, and that set me off for a couple of days of nightmares and insomnia. That wasn't even a full episode -- just the few minutes at the end when I was waiting for the next show to start. I can't believe that sort of garbage is on TV.

I love horror movies and books. But when it comes to shows like Law and Order Special Victims, count me out. Anything that involves child abuse of any kind I cannot watch.

nah I can't handle any of that stuff guys... and don't subject myself to it, protect myself from it...

except: I force myself to enjoy the Splash Mountain at Disney. I call it "a controlled panic attack" because it's over so quickly and it really is breathtaking and everyone ends up laughing at himself for being so "scared."
