i was walking through walmart and felt kind of nervous...

then my throat tightened, my chest was pounding SO hard and I was having trouble breathing right. I take buspar 4x a day.....can it make anxiety worse? I dont even know why I freaked....or am still kind of panicky.

I think Walmart makes anxiety worse. Walmart could push the most calm, laid back person in the entire world, over the edge. As far as BuSpar, that is not known to be the best anti-anxiety med out there... I was on it for my very first med and it did absolutely nothing. I had a panic attack in the store today, too. Meds work different for different people, but maybe speak with your doctor about the fact that you are still having so much anxiety while on this med.

Walmart causes me a lot of problems too. I also had no luck on buspar, I agree that it may be time to discuss other options with your doctor. walmart hell

The Mall Wart is hell. Becuase of the problems down here, we have to travel at least an hour in any direction to get to one. So by the time i even get there, my anxiety is high. Then going in there and hearing people yelling at their kids and smacking them around just makes it worse. I've so many times left my basket and just walked out. Cause if not my anxiety was turning into anger and that would not have been pretty.

It's been probably 6 months since i've gone to a Mall Wart. Target seems a little more upscale and if i need something from there that i cant get at the Winn Dixie I'll take the drive and go to Target instead. And they have a Bed, Bath and Beyond next door.

(((( HUGS )))) - I have not been in this forum for a while, but I saw the title of your thread and it spoke to me as I have suffered some anxiety while trying to shop in Wal-Mart many years back & many times over............ I am better now as I use to run out of the store, but now I stay and fight for my right to be any where I desire to be present in.

Stay calm & cool........ YOU CAN DO IT!!

walmart hell for all.

Any very large store can cause increased anxiety, and can be especially troublesome for those with anxiety disorders.
Too much sensory input is only part of it (thousands of products = thousands of mental decisions)....

There's another phenomena with the restaurant "Fridays"... and the "Cheesecake Factory" as they are hustle and bustle and noisy and bright and.... well, too much sensory input!

Walmart is horrible for causing anxiety attacks. I had my first big anxiety attack there..my dad had to almost carry me out of the store and people where staring and pointing. I couldn't go to wal-mart for months after words. I think it is the atmosphere in most Wal-marts..it is so tense and there are so many people in there that are angry. Take care Halliebeth87 walmart hell walmart hell walmart hell

My husband and I walked into Walmart once and immediately tried to walk out; I say "tried" because it was a maze and not easy to get out of, LOL. But we won't do it just because. I'd rather pay a bit more for a better shopping experience and/or get deals online and have things delivered (even better :-) I just got a little 14" push lawn mower delivered from Target online a couple days ago and I love it. Shipping was almost the cost of the product, LOL, but still less than the mower would have been in any store, if any store had one like it (this model was only offered online).

I agree... I'm usually pretty calm and enjoy being around people... but too many people... and I get lost... and too loud... and I kinda go a bit beserk. Or I pick up bad attitudes that people shove at me, and it makes me cranky... and I'm usually a pretty nice person (if I do say so myself)

Yes...that would actually be my #1 reason for boycotting Wal-Mart, although the crowds get to me too. I've taken enough economics classes to know that competition is a GOOD thing for a free market economy. Makes no sense to save $1.00 on your shampoo if the guy putting the shampoo on the shelf has to go on government assistance just to make ends meet and the manufacturer has to use cheaper, lower-quality products to meet the retailer's prices. Wal-mart is putting backwards pressure on the system - forcing manufacturers to make something for a set price, rather than the manufacturer selling to them and the retailer adding a markup.

I actually did a research project for my cost accounting class on Wal-mart & Rubbermaid. Very interesting.

I haven't set foot in a Wal-Mart since 2001, except to use the bathroom!
