I take 1mg of Ativan 3 x day for anxiety related to BPD. I've been taking this for about 5 weeks now. I am noticing less relief and more panic attacks. I know Ativan can be addictive so I'm unsure about upping the dose. Anyone experience med tolerance for anxiety related to BPD.

Maybe ativan is the wrong med. Different meds react differently with different people. I would talk to your prescribing physician. There are many things out there that you could take instead of the ativan. Also don't for get to work on breathing excercises and relaxation techniques.

You might wanna try a different med. I know on some meds I got worse instead of getting better...so maybe that's your reaction with Ativan.

ativan is highly addictive, and one of the symptoms of addiction is tollerance - requiring more to get the same effect. That's why Ativan should not be used for long term therapy. I'm on Clonazapam (same family of drugs) 1 mg 3 x / day for anxiety and I've been on it for about a year. I've noticed that I don't get the same immediated relief that I got with Ativan, but it stays in your system longer so you don't get the same crashes / rebound anxiety that you get with Ativan. Actually when I say I'm on 3 mg a day that's a bit of an exageration as I often forget to take it, so realistically I'm probably only taking 1 mg most days.

You might also want to explore Buspar with your Dr., I've never tried it, but it's supposed to be for anxiety and non-addicting.

Good luck.

Your age and metabolic rate will also factor in at some point.

The older you get you in fact may find that your need will lesson over time also.

The rate change of course cannot be predicted but the older you get the slower the metabolic rate, thus hopefully less need for the medication.

Well, 3x daily should help you so maybe it is the wrong med after all.

I agree with everyone else. I found Klonopin to be a better match for my anxiety! Good luck
