I know this deals w/ meds but I don’t go to any other areas besides this one. I just feel people here can understand more ‘bout meds when there’s more than one so to speak in the Body. I haven’t been on meds in awhile. Hate the way they make me feel.
Started Effexor XR 37.5 mg Wed. night, didn’t feel anything. My doc said Effexor can either make you sleepy or awake. First day nothing, I had taken it after 10pm. Thurs night I took it 9pm & I had a hard time sleeping, was in bed by 1am (my usual is 3am). I kept waking up. Was up at 10:30am again (my normal is noon). It reminds me of how I feel when I take a cold med. Those w/ pseudo-ephedrine. They make me ‘awake’. A night time one I had taken knocked me out but must’ve had the same amount of psy-eph ‘cos I kept waking up & it was like I had insomnia. I was tired, but I would just lay there. That’s how Effexor makes me feel. Fri up at 10:30am again, which I love. Got a lot done & 50 & sunny. I feel kinda numb, I don't have any anxiety or depression, I just am not feeling right now, don't know if that's good or bad, I'm just here. Though I am pretty manic, I'm just not feeling any feelings. Before mind be wired & body tired. Now mind tired & body wired. Which is worse? On 3-27 took Ativan 1mg at 12am, 20 min. can feel it, in bed 1am stumbling, felt drunk (& I’ve never drank before!). Was scared ‘cos never know what side effects will be. But I slept good, up 10:15am. No nightmares which is first in a long time. & it seems to counteracts Effexor’s manic effect on me & that numbingness. I still feel numb but I feel good which is hard for me to feel ‘cos it’s taboo in the mind. Not long lasting drowsiness like Seroquel which is good.
Yet I’ve been having to take naps later in the day. I don’t know if I want to take Ativan w/ my root canal Tues. It knocks me out pretty well. I want to know what’s going on you know. I wouldn’t mind if they knocked me out after I’m settled in but not me stumbling in there. I take Effexor at 12pm & Ativan at 12am. I’m gonna try a ½ dose tonight of Ativan.
Love,
RhysMadison

RhysMadison,

I am certainly no expert. I can just say what I would do under same circumstances.

I guess I would give the Effexor time to settle as to how it's going to make you feel. I don't know that Ativan and Effexor have any interactions. (I don"t think so) I would think if they did your doc or pharmacist would have been alerted. You can always call and ask.

As far as the dentist and taking the Ativan Could you tell the dentist how stressed you are and then do take it when you get ready to go in? I often take Ativan as 1/2 mg instead of 1mg. It takes the edge off without feeling drowsy.

I believe non-drowsy cough meds would have the Ephedrine but the Night time certainly should not. It is the active ingredient to make it non-drowsy.

I guess I would suggest talking to Doc and Pharmacist to get a clearer and professional answer. I am just rattling out my opinion here.

Take good care. My thoughts are with you my friend.

It sounds like you have a good handle on this RhysMadison.

Ativan is rather fast acting for most people and your description of it sounds like it was potent for you. Your idea of taking only half tonight sounds like you're listening to your body well.

I know this root canal is scary but you're going to be on the other side of it before you know it! Your dh is going to be delivering you and taking you home. Your doc or therapist was going to get in touch with the dentist which will have helped ease the way.

You're going to go in there tomorrow morning properly medicated and they will then make sure to administer the appropriate amounts of their dental numbing stuff (real medical terminology there! meds ) so that you are not feeling anything in the area of the tooth being worked on.

You have not only the right but the obligation for everyone inside to use a hand signal with the dentist if anything hurts at any time. A good dentist will stop immediately and make sure that you're okay before proceeding. Your dentist is going to be a good one!! meds

Thinking of you now and will continue on thinkin' of ya tomorrow while you're in the chair.

Healing thoughts your way hon.

I was on Effexor once (225 mgs!), and it made me soooo jittery and wired, and I had trouble falling alseep, but they perscribed me Trazodone to help with the insomnia. I was also on a super low dose of ativan, and it made me feel the way you're describing.

I'm heading offline for the evening and I'll be thinking of you as I wake up because at that time you'll be in the chair already halfway through your proceedure. My sleepy thoughts are still valid and good even if they are sleepy! meds

Sending you good thoughts and healing vibes for afterwards.

(((RhysMadison))) You're all going to do great with this!

meds((((Rhys))))))))))))))))

Just a note from the unemployed psych nurse/DIDer:

Effexor XR is to be taken in the morning (that's when I take mine) Effecor XR is like an "upper" anti-depressant...which would account for your trouble sleeping. The Ativan is going to always make you sleepy. Ativan is classified as an anti-anxiety & sedative/hypnotic,anti-emetic (Emetic is nausea/throwing up) If you take any other CNS depressants w/ the Ativan, you will be VERY "spaced out" Adverse reactions to Ativan are "lethargy, drowsiness, feeling of "hang-over"
So, I can understand you're hesistant about taking it after your dentist; use your best judgement.......after a dentist appt., you may WANT to sleep. This has just been a "by-the-book" advisory/informative info. Always consult your physician first.

Good Luck! meds(((((((((DAYZEE))))))))))))))))))))
