I go to a family's home to teach piano to their two teens girls. What I have noticed is that the guy across the street seems to have a compulsion to drive his truck in and out of the driveway. I asked one the girls - She says he does this all the time. Sometimes he waits for a long time, just sitting there in the street (in the truck) and waits, then goes around the block and re-parks. I HAVE OCD and I really think this guy has it too. I just hope he gets some help. I hope he finds out he has OCD.

I could never park a vehicle PERFECTLY. I would park, get out and examine, reposition the vehicle and so on. I have to push myself to accept it as is and go about my business. This happens with, what seems like, just about everything in life. I don't think it's to the point a doctor would diagnose it as OCD.

Question for cms:

How did you discover that you were behaving in a way that was abnormal or disruptive to your life?

Hello, cms.

I'd like to know if OCD affects your piano playing.

I play guitar and seem to keep playing the same runs over and over. Learning how to play does require repetition, of course, but I don't seem to move further on with the instrument.

Fried: I think as soon I started having the compulsions: getting up and down in chairs, going in and out of rooms, and repeating tasks unnecessarily, I knew I was acting in an unreasonable manner. These things are not things "normal" people do. People around me did not do these things. Intense inner anxiety MADE me do things that made me LOOK weird. I did not WANT to look weird. But I HAD to do them.

Hi fried,

The thing with the guitar runs might be more innocent. It's a really common thing if your practising on your own. I play guitar too and if you get with some other good players who are willing to share the whole world opens up.

For some reason I've never been able to pick up good stuff from watching live players, I need to be in rehearsals with someone who is open and prepared to slow down a little. I have had one or two real breakthroughs in this way, particularly with my claw hammer style.

This is getting off topic for the board, so I'll close now.

Good luck, Myzen Guy across the street
