When I was a kid the doctors thought I had adhd but being the stubborn kid that i was/am I didn't attend any of the testing. I now regret this a bit as i still display some of the traits and they impact on my life. I scored 108 on the online quiz here, I know this isn't a diagnoses or anything but it's got me thinking it's maybe something I should have pursued when I was younger.
Anyway my question is, in the UK can you be tested for adult ADHD, is it even recognised or will I just get laughed out the shop(doctors)?

Thanks for your time x

I cannot answer anything about the UK, but, in the USA, the can and *do* test and treat for adult ADD/ADHD. Please do call your doctor. No reputable doctor will laugh at you for an honest medical question. And this is a serious medical condition with serious consequences.

Peace!

I'm also in the US so I can't speak for UK procedures. Just wanted to offer my support and say that I was diagnosed as an adult at age 22. I struggled thru high school with symptoms and somehow figured out a way to graduate from college untreated. Treatment/medication can make such a difference for someone with ADD, so please follow sunflower's advice and talk to your doctor about it.

Hi! I was diagnosed at 40! I struggled through school, college (took 7 years) and now almost 20 years later and medication I am in grad school pursuing marriage and family counseling with all As! The medication has done so much for me. I only wish I had have know so many years ago. I wonder what path I could have gone, but can't worry about that. Have you tried looking for UK adhd sites? Can you find a specialist or counselor in UK that can test you? I was diagnosed by a counselor then referred to a doctor for medication. He also did a quick test. Surely there is someone to help you. Hope you find someone! Good luck to you!

Yet another also in the US and can't speak for the UK. But I was tested and diagnosed as an adult for both Aspergers and ADD/ADHD. Neuropsychologists do the testing. I've been tested 3 times for ADD/ADHD (depending on the neuropsych). They used questionaires of childhood and adult experiences and very extensive word memorizing/recognition lists to look for inattentiveness. The last neuropsych I saw also administered two different very lengthy computer tests to measure attention span. hee hee and I failed miserably. I think its very definitive testing, though also a neuropsych can look at your adult experiences of difficulty in college and problems learning on the job skills. At least for me it became apparent just from my work history I had ADHD even before going through testing. Plus I suspect after you sit in the room with them for 7 hours of testing they ahem *notice* you aren't paying attention.

Hi, I'm in my 40s. One of the tools my PNP used to assess me for ADHD last year was the CAARS (Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales):
http://www.pearsonassessments.com/caars.aspx

I also used the online tests by Amen (recommended by my PNP), which I thought were pretty good, as they break the diagnosis down into a number of ADHD subtypes and there are questions that help with differential diagnosis (from depression, anxiety, etc.). I think I paid about $10 to take these.

Just beware at this site, there are many opportunities to buy books, vitamins, etc. But I thought their test was very comprehensive and didn't feel like I do on so many tests--that their questions are "one size fits all."

I'm almost 60 and I just learned I was. I've pretty much managed my entire life (last 3 yrs on sertraline which helps me) and now I hope to use what I learn to hopefully help others along with my continual self-improvement. I feel similar to ghideous, holley that it makes one wonder if life would have been much different had I known earlier????
Thanks for this!
