There might be a connection between NOT having crawled as a child and having ADD. (ADHD as an adult is generally thought to be undiagnosed ADD as a child.)
I remember reading eons ago about adults with certain difficulties being found to never have crawled, and once the physical therapy to help them learn to and exercise as crawling, their difficulties improved and often were removed. (Sorry, I can't recall what the difficulties were.) So I'm just wondering... what percentage of people here never crawled as a child? Please don't feel you have to write a response, the anonymous poll is good. ![]()

Interesting Point JD. There has been much suggested coorelation between lack of sufficent cross patterning : eg, not enough crawling at the correct developmental stage, and learning disabilities such as dyslexia. I have not heard about a coorelation to ADD/ADHD as well.
Many years ago, a highly esteemed music coach was here from Manhattan doing a workshop. Amongst world class musicians she coached, she would also coach some Julliard students. in other words, she really knew what she was doing. The person who brought her to my town to do the workshop asked me if she could use my piano ( and room it was in) to do private sessions. And in exchange I could take the workshop. I said of course that would be great. After she was done for the day with the private sessions she asked me to play. I did that. Somehow the topic of dyslexia came up. She immediatly said " please get down and crawl for me". I found it interesting that she was very quick to ask me to crawl as a dx tool to see if I was in fact dyslexic. btw, I could not crawl well when she asked. Apparantly, the cross patterning had not even been established in my early 30s. But I am curious to know if the ADD is also caused from this. And if so, perhaps it can be corrected by estabilishing the cross patterning. Thanks again |

I voted for my son. Yes, he crawled and yes, he has ADHD. So did my niece now that I think about it.

That's fine, thanks! All those who are here reading, without this disorder, there's a spot for you to vote too

My oldest daughter did not crawl. She rolled on her side over and over again to get from place to place until she was able to pull up to walk. She was amazing to watch! She is a young adult now, and no she does not have ADHD.
My teenage daughter did crawl, and she does not seem to have ADHD either. As far as I know I crawled (never thought to ask my Mom ![]() (I could only vote once so just voted for myself and not my daughters' situations.)

I was stuck crawling for long time because when I first learned to walk I broke my femur falling off a ladder. I had a skateboard that I layed on to get around the house.

I know that one issue not-crawling related to is learning to read. As a kid I helpe another kid learn to read - she later had to learn to crawl.

I didn't find a spot on the poll for me =)
I did eventually crawl, but am told my legs were moving so fast that I never gained traction. so they had to put their hand behind my feet to push off of until i got the hang of it. I am ADHD - was Dxed at 4 or 5 years old... then ADD as a college student. Now i know that i am dealing with trauma issues and they are far more complicated... so who knows - it may never have been ADHD at all, merely children's reactions to stress and childhood ptsd (which I did study for my masters).

Well I haven't searched, but I do wonder if there is some research being done specifically in having those with ADD/ADHD go through a physical therapy crawling program. Of course, anyone interested could search and perhaps include crawling into their daily exercise and see if it eventually helps.

I voted 'never crawled and have ADD' but have to qualify it:
I did crawl a bit, on the late side. I went from just sitting around to walking a bit and crawling a bit. And I was a bit late too though not spectacularly (two), and not talking at all till then either. And being very much on the quiet side all my young days. And I soon left off crawling to the extent that I have been conscious of always being awkward at crawling ever after. An 'expert teacher' suggested I have ADD. I saw that expert after some colleagues of mine at the time got interested in finding out their own 'diversity'. I have not taken a specific medicine for ADD per se. I account for the symptoms by the bipolar and the small seisures I have been discussing with my GP more recently. I have specific learning differences often associated with ADD. |

Well according to the quiz on this site I am 97% chance of ADD, not a surprise and something I have wondered for a while but as yet undiagnosed. I did not crawl at all and was walking at 8 mths according to mum so don't quite know if that means anything. My daughter did not crawl either but did a weird bum shuffle with one leg out like a crab and the other tucked underneath her lol very funny to watch and she was sooo fast. She is extremely bright but I don't believe she has a MH problem. In some ways I wonder if having a (possible), ADD mum may have helped encourage early learning and so helped her achieve her level of early undeniable brilliance. And yes I am a proud mama lol. My 13 yr old has just been invited to compete at a science competition at a prestigious Uni after being invited to view their facility based on her science scores last year, ( 1st yr of high school). I wonder if she would be as bright without a manic mum who is meticulous with detail and values intelligence above all else. Just thought I would through it out there as we are often criticised for the negative effect we have on our kids but although that may be true to a certain level are we not also better parents when it comes to understanding, play and allowing them to think outside the box and encourage this.

I haven't voted, because the jury is still out on my grandson. He's not two yet, and hasn't been diagnosed with anything, although all three of his older half-siblings show some signs of ADD or ODD. I don't know if they have official diagnoses.
And my grandson skipped the crawling phase and went right to walking. |

I crawled as a child and so did my nieces, and we all have ADD. Thankfully we have used it to our advantage in school and are making good grades. (I can't stop taking some class or another.)

I was crawling at a very early age. I was walking at 7 months. I was really advanced as far as all that is concerned.

I crawled.. but it was later in life...
I didn't really crawl as a baby, but then when i was like 6 and 7 that's all i ever did, wearing holes in my pants and everything. lol. It was my favorite way of getting around. And as a baby I went from belly time to pulling myself up. I didn't do the crawling part of it.

Well I don't know if I crawled as a baby, I'd have to ask about that, but I do remember crawling and running around on my hands and knees when I was a child (I would also pretend I was an animal, maybe chase the cat that way)
I don't know if i have ADD/ADHD, though the psychologist I saw said it was more likely. |
