My 16 year old daughter has just been prescribed strattera. What are your experiences with the drug? Right now, it's making her sleep a lot!

Oddly, Strattera can be either activating or sedating. It depends on the person. Also, the sedating effect can improve with time. So if she just started on Strattera, I would advise waiting for that to subside, at least several weeks. And keep in touch with the prescribing doctor and let him/her know what side effects your daughter is experiencing. Sometimes the dose can be adjusted, but again, it may be best to wait a while because the body often adjusts and side effects subside. Good luck.

I had been taking strattera for a few weeks only to develop bad muscle pain that felt as though I were continiously being ''frogged'', upper stomach pains and extreme sleepiness. I had also completly lost my appatite,so in order to function I had to go off of it.Even since I have been off of it,I still require ten or more hours of sleep[which I dislike] where previously,I only required four,to six hours of sleep. It's as though the medicine ''reset'' my system somehow.

I have a cardiac issue so I was prescribed Strattera rather than a stimulating med (Adderall, etc.). My doctor titrated the dosage over several weeks to 80mgs. once a day. I found it to be very sedating. I remained on 80mgs. for about a month but it did not seem to help with my ADD at all. I was just "dazed" and sleepy. I was very disappointed because I was looking forward to improvement.

If you are looking for a med for ADHD that is not a stimulant, another option is bupropion. I took that for ADHD and just stopped it a couple of months ago. My PNP thought I didn't need bupropion plus a stimulant (Vyvanse) and I had been taking both for quite a while. She thought the Vyvanse would be enough. I am thinking of going back to her and starting the bupropion again. I think it was helping me a lot more than we thought. That was a surprise to me, as while taking it, I wasn't really conscious of its effects. I remember getting an improvement when I began taking it, but I had forgotten that, because I became used to being more functional, I think.

Anyway, that might be another option if Strattera doesn't help. Good luck.

when diagnosed with add, i was put on stratera and it made my moods worse and i cried more and there was no increase in attention, so i now take vyavanse, which is working alright, i think i need a higher dose cause it helped, but not to the extent as i need right now.

I have been taking strattera for about 10 years, It is a great drug that can definetly improve, I am know for a fact i am 100% better than before, but i feel as i entered teenage years side effects come up, Like i am constantly drowsy, and have a few depressive moments from it. Much safer than oher drugs i have read up on.
