Hello, my name is Nikolay Perov. I am from Moscow, Russia. I am not native English speaker, so please sorry for my language.
What do you think of meditation effect towards ADHD treatment? Some years ago i was experiencing ADHD symptoms (inability to concentrate, inability to relax, uncontrolled energy bursts, anxiety, etc.) Besides ADHD i had panic attacks, depression, and other health problems. But meditation helped me a lot. I think it is the best solution for ADHD and other problems. Drugs have only temporary positive effect IMHO. To get rid of ADHD (or depression, or PA) you have to work with yourself, to break many of your habits, to learn new habits and new discipline, but not to take pills. Easy solutions don't work. |

I for one, would never be able to meditate. I just can't do it. I don't have the desire, or the patience for it.
But I agree- medication is not a fix all.

Medications, as i've learned are the lifeline for me in my life right now. i think my problem was i didn't want to have a quick fix, but believe me there is something good about it. i am a lifer on meds i'm sure i'll be on them the rest of my life because i've tried going off of them and anger gets out of control, so does mind fog. if i only knew what i was putting others through i would have downed a bottle just to be in control and not a bother. it probably has alot to do with my diagnosis of schitzoaffective bipolar and head injuries etc, one million other things it seems, but when i look back i see a bad person i never want to be or see again. the meds do work for me, even though i sill have problems with anxiety, i am learning through yoga now to rest my mind. i am also happy i lived to be 52 and be able to look back and see the story play out for me.

Nikolay, yes, I think meditation is vital for my ADD (but I also take meds). I've had to get creative with how I meditate because I can't just sit down and do it. I listen to lectures done by my pdoc and whenever my mind wonders I bring it back to his voice. Eventually I no longer hear his voice and my mind is still--there I am meditating...........D.

I have felt a similar sentiment at one point. I was convinced I could go without my ADHD medication and tried meditation and relaxation techniques but the hard work did not pay off. To me it feels like medication is a medium through which you can build up good habits and if possible taper off of them.

My mind is anti meditation. If I keep a low pace on things I can feel rather relaxed. If I stop doing things.... try not to think.... WHAM!... my head is clogged with thoughts. It's really rebelling against being quietened down.

I have practiced meditation and yoga and while I do get benefits, there was no real effect on my ADD symptoms. I think alot depends on what symptoms a person experiences.

Eff. I've always loved the idea of meditation. If they had like a How To Meditate Guide when you have ADHD I'd be all over it.

Yoga is really different for me, not that I do it a lot. Because when you do yoga you do things and it keeps my mind busy.

for a long time I had such a hard time sitting still for long that meditating would not ever seem like an option for me. But now that I am on medication for it, i can do a lot better.
also I find if I use guided meditation like ones found on youtube I can do that a lot easier then others.
