So I got diagnosed with ADHD by my therapist about 2 or 3 years ago, and I started taking medication for it. During the work day I would often get very little work done sometimes absolutely none. Originally I took Vyvanse, and my PDOC would keep upping my dose because I felt like it was wearing off extremely quickly. Even at max dosage though I still felt like I would get an intense buzz in which I could usually be productive, but after a couple hours it would wear off.
So he switched me over to aderall, which has let me space out the time in which I'm taking my medicine, but I still feel a lot of the same issues. I just find it extremely difficult to spend a decent amount of time working on something before I get easily distracted and find myself doing something else. Even while on the medication I have a terrible work ethic and spend way too much time just browsing the internet or killing time. It feels kind of hopeless, like I'll never be able to be functional at my job. Does anybody else know this feeling or have any advice?

I know this feeling. I'm not on any meds currently. I'm just praying that when I begin taking them that they work.

I know exactly how you feel. When I first started taking adderall it seemed to work really well but quite quickly I felt like it was wearing off too soon. Then I switched to 30mg XR twice a day which was a little better but I still dont feel as productive as I did when I first starting on adderall. I wish I had a solution for you but something someone told me might help. She said to stay away from acidic foods a drinks when you first take it because they can effect how long it works. admittedly I forget alot but have noticed some difference when I remember to watch the acid intake till Im sure the adderall is digested.

Everyone responds differently to ADD/ADHD medication. Some people experience dramatic improvement while others experience little to no relief. The side effects also differ from person to person and, for some, they far outweigh the benefits. Because everyone responds differently, finding the right medication and dose takes time.
Have you ever tried Benzo's? "The most common side-effects of benzodiazepines are related to their sedating and muscle-relaxing action. It slows you down. I don't know but I do know these issues take time. I hope and wish you luck with this. |

If you would like a tidbit of advice, I would advise not to chase the 'high' feeling you get from them. It's easy to do, because I thought the high I got was the only sign of it working. It can be dangerous, so use safely and as directed by your doc.

![]() That's good advice though, I don't really pay too much attention to my diet in regards to how it combines with the adderall, so I will definitely have to look into that. Do you have any suggestions for a breakfast/lunch with low acidity?

Citrus affects lots of meds. So anything with actual oranges or grapefruit. Especially grapefruit. And maybe (not sure about this one) Vitamin C tablets.

Are they safe for long term usage? And are they often prescribed for ADD/anxiety/depression?

Yes, to an extent. Of any 'work' I can imagine myself doing, it's what I enjoy the most. I'm a programmer, and I really enjoy the process of building something and I take a lot of pride in seeing the completed work (when everything runs correctly of course
![]() So to sum it up, my job isn't perfect, but I feel as though I get a good amount of enjoyment from it, and I shouldn't have such a struggle concentrating on my work.

I am not on any meds - yet - either. And I also have a horrible time getting work done. This started once I started working from home.

I too was just diagnosed recently at the age of 40. Tried both concerta and adderall but just like you I tend to spend more time browsing the net and doing something else besides my actual work.
I will see my PDoc tomorrow and hope to get something that will actually help me with my concentration and focus. |
