Hello all..... I was recently diagnosed with ADD. It was very enlightning for me to realize I actualy had a name for what was going on inside my brain. I am 40 so you can imagine how long I have wandered this.
Thing now is, I do want to get some counseling and help for it. I read and article about a life coach and a good phyciatrist or phsycologist that either could help.
The problem is, I live out in a very rural area and it's about 40 miles to where one is. I do have health insurance that I am sure would cover it, but the price of Gas now is so high it would cost a fortune to go in.
Does any one know about therapy online and where or how I can get this?
Thanks in advance.

There are some online services available and for ADD it seems like it would be okay.

Unfortunately I don't' have any personal recommendations. As far as I know your insurance will not cover online therapy.

Hi, Sugarplum, welcome to PsychCentral. Check here with these folks: http://www.metanoia.org/ for online, email therapy; but PsyChris is right, your insurance probably won't cover it if it's online versus face-to-face.

I imagine whoever diagnosed you with the ADD might know of some therapists in the area? Did you ask that doctor?

See if CHADD can help with some ideas: http://www.chadd.org/AM/Template.cfm...lly_For_Adults

Or maybe the adult AD/HD association: http://www.add.org/

Hi,
I agree with the suggestion of contacting ADDA or CHADD. CHADD has chapters throughout the country and the coordinators would know of any clinicians in your area. Call 800-233-4050 for the chapter number closest to you, or visit their site at www.chadd.org and click on "Finding Support" or something like that.

I don't know of any ADD experts that do online counseling, but I'm sure there are clinicians who have an understanding of ADD that do online work. Just make sure you screen them well to ensure they have a solid understanding of adult ADHD. Still, if you can find someone face to face, that would be best.

I offer email consultations, but not ongoing email therapy.

Good luck and let me know if I can help you.

Regards,

Terry Matlen, ACSW

I think I would have felt more comfortable doing e-mail therapy. For the 1st 6 months or so, face-to-face was too intense for me. However in hindsight, dealing with face-to-face communication was exactly what I needed, even if I didn't like it. I think the recommendations for contacting the various organizations to find a GOOD therapist are good ones. It is a shame that you live in an area where there are no therapist in close proximity.
