My son is taking Strattera because he has tics which he has had for a long time, long before his dx of ADHD in April 2008 and his doctor didn't want to prescribe a stimulant but I am starting to think the Strattera isn't working the best. He is doing better in school but having mood swings and tantrums really bad. I have read some articles that stimulants can help. Any suggestions on a good stimulant?

I tried Strattera but only for 1 month, not long enough to see the effects. I did not notice any change in my ADHD symptoms. The research I found on this medication is not has promising as it is for the stimulants. However, stimulants have been around a lot longer. I would keep reading, keep questioning your doctor, and keep monitoring your son's symptoms. In the end the choice of medication and dosage will likely take a lot of trial an error. Factor in that he is growing and changing makes this even more true.

I am going to ask their pediatrician tomorrow what he thinks about putting him on a stimulant rather than Strattera and see if it helps his mood swings and outbursts. I have a free trial for Vyvanse. Have you heard anything about that medication??

I haven't heard anything about Vyvanse for kids, but my PNP thinks highly of it for adults. I believe it is a stimulant released more slowly into the body than some of the others, because it must be metabolized first to the active form. I don't think it gives that jolt that some of the other stimulants do and that is good because it is not so prone to abuse. I think you just take it once a day. I don't know about using it in kids. What does your son's doctor say?

I haven't talked to him yet about it. I go today and I was going to ask him what he thought. I am just having a hard time with his mood swings and tantrum/outbursts. I really don't think the strattera is working.
