I was just wondering how easy is it to missdiagnose ADD/ADHD in adults. I seriously think I have it and don't think my doc is wanting to diagnose me with it. I go to her tomorrow. I don't know if maybe she thinks I can't handle the meds due to my anxiety or what? The more I read about it I belive that is the root of my problems. Just wondered how often this may happen...
have a great day guys!

Yes my ADD went undiagnosed, for me, it was because I am an emotional person, and love the emotionality of therapy, pay attention fine during a therapy/pdoc appt, because that is my language, emotional language...come the real world...full of boredom not a lot of emotionality..THAT'S when I need to keep changing my location, my ideas, physically move, so there was no way for my Pdoc to know what about me he sees me in my, best element...

You could take an online test about ADD and show your Pdoc the results..or even show him your post here..or literature you relate to whether it's a book or pamphlet...

What symptoms do you have that you can share with your doctor? Perhaps if you're more specific..

The way I was evaluated... I would have to say misdiagnoses are probably common. You need to be your own advocate. Take one of the online assessment, bring some of articles with you to the doctor's office and clearly present your case. Then leave the articles and online assessment with your doctor. If they are interested in help you, they will consider the evidence you brought and investigate it, even if their goal is to rule out the likelihood of ADHD.

I don't think most doctors are qualified to diagnose ADHD. Can you go to a specialist, such as a pdoc or PNP or psychologist who has a lot of expertise in ADHD? Maybe you could tell your doctor that you suspect you have some ADHD symptoms and would like to see a specialist and ask for a referral. That lets your doc off the hook about a diagnosis but enables her to do something to help.

I take some meds for ADHD and have anxiety sometimes too. My treatment has not made my anxiety worse.

Thank you so much for replying! I went to the doc today and she prescribed me concerta. We will see how it goes. So now I will be taking paxil, wellbutrin and concerta.

Does that mean you now carry a diagnosis of ADHD?

I don't know, I'd still consider seeing a specialist in spite of the prescription--someone who works with an adult ADHD population. As sunrise said, most doctors aren't very qualified with ADHD. It is also often misdiagnosed as Bipolar.
