Good afternoon everyone!

I'm new here, just intro'd myself in the newbie forum. Anyway, I was wondering if some of you can chime in with your experience regarding your diagnosis of ADD/ADHD.

A few questions!

1. Did you go to your first appointment and tell your doc that you think you might have ADD/ADHD, or did you just tell him/her your symptoms and then take it from there?

2. What was the screening and diagnosing process like? (Did they ask you a lot of questions, or did they just make you talk? Did you have to fill out questionnaires?)

and lastly, but not least,

3. How long did it take for your doc to make that diagnosis? One session? A couple of weeks? A couple of months?

Thanks so much. I've been in psychotherapy for some months now, but want to see a psychiatrist as well. I suspect that I might have ADD/ADHD or anxiety, or depression, or hell, a combination of any of them.

My first appointment is this Tuesday, and I would like to know what to expect on that day!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards,
TsB

I thought it, and other people did too, so I was referred and it went from there.

2. What was the screening and diagnosing process like? (Did they ask you a lot of questions, or did they just make you talk? Did you have to fill out questionnaires?)

They asked a lot of questions at the appointment, then they gave a questionnaire to my mother, my school, and myself, then they did a chart and put the scores onto the chart, there was a white and pink and red zone, white being lowest, red being highest.

and lastly, but not least,

3. How long did it take for your doc to make that diagnosis? One session? A couple of weeks? A couple of months?

It took a couple of months for me, however, it can take shorter or longer.
Diagnosing must be done properly, so it needs more exploration into finding out about everything going on and it does take time.

I first went to my family dr. Told him that someon had mentioned ADD to me and that I wanted to get his opinion. He asked several questions and referred me to a neuropsychiatrist.

When I went to the psych dr, I was there for 3 hours. I know different drs do different processes. He first asked me a series of question like why I thought I had ADD, and alot about my history. Then the "test began". I was a long adn exhausting test which tested my memory and attention. He then got the "score" and sent that to my family dr in about 2 weeks. My family dr gave me the results that I did in fact have ADD and started me on meds.

I guess it all depemds on the severity of your ADD and how the drs handle it. It only a 3 appt process but it took 2 months to get to all of them.

Best of Luck to You!!

Thanks for your responses!

I really hope the psychiatrist doesn't want to talk to any of my family members, friends, etc. because I'm such a private person. I'd never tell anyone about this.

Anyway, thanks again I'll update with how things go on Tuesday.
