I have been on medication for ADD for about 3 years. Ever since i was put on medication for antidepressants in December, my sleeping has been insane. My doctor says that the reason I am so groggy all day (can't seem to wake up) and don't feel awake until nighttime is because of my ADD. I started taking my concerta in the morning 30 minutes before I need to wake up, it seems to help a little. Anyone else having this problem?

You don't feel awake until nighttime but you take your ADD meds in the morning? That's interesting. Not sure what other meds you take but perhaps something needs to be adjusted. What anti-depressant are you on? Maybe that's whats causing the problem.

I take Adderall XR and my routine is to take it in the morning and go back to sleep for about one hour. Then I am ready to wake up. If I don't take it I'll be asleep on and off all day and will never seem to wake up.

I had the same problem, I was sleeping only every other night and there were a few times I was up for 2 looooooong nights. I am in nursing school so this was not going to get it. It wasn't the Adderall = it was the antidepressant. I was taking Effexor along with Adderall XR and that was too "activating," it was giving me really bad anxiety and racing thoughts. I couldn't sleep. Nothing would knock me out. I tried benadryl, good sleep hygiene, two glasses of wine before bed, Klonopin, Lunesta, Ambien, Restoril, trazadone, seroquel. Nothing.

So my pdoc changed me to Adderall IR 20mg/3times a day and put me on Lexapro. Same thing. I have a really good pdoc and he wanted to take me off the Lexapro and try something he had been hearing about from his colleagues. Neurontin. WOW! The Neurontin slammed my anxiety to the ground and SPANKED my depression. So...I take 300 mg/neurontin 3xday, and the adderall IR 20mg/3x day. Perfect combo.

Good luck.

Hi! I am new to this forum. I have been on adderal for the last 2 years and it's affects are wearing off. It doesn't last long enough anymore. I do like how it helps me focus while I am studying, but I find that within a few hours I become frustrated and angry because I have lost my focus. My insurance doesn't pay for psychiatric drugs so Adderal XR is expensive and so are all the other ADHD drugs, since they have no generic available yet. My doctor gave me script for Effexor, which I have had before, but not with adderal. You said it didn't work for you in that it made you anxious and couldn't sleep. Is this neurotin new on the market and is it expensive? I didn't get the effexor because it was almost $100.00 in the generic kind. My generic adderal is $80.00 and I couldn't justify spending so much on these meds eventhough it helps me get going and motivates me to study. I just take the adderal as I need it when I am studying, and I don't know if that is good for me. Anyway, thanks for your time!

I've just signed up for this site, as I feel I've had ADHD my entire life. I've never been medically diagnosed as having ADHD, but can relate to having a great deal of difficulty sleeping. Could this be due to ADHD, or other issues. I wish you the best.

There is something called delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), which I have read is fairly common among people with ADHD. It basically means that your natural body rhythms want you to sleep from about 4 am to noon, instead of 11-7 or whatever hours "normal people" sleep. In other words, people with DSPS have trouble getting to sleep if they try to go to bed at a decent hour, but once they get to sleep they can sleep the night away (and half of the day too.) I have ADHD and I think I have this - I have always tended to be a "night owl," and if I don't have to get up early for work, my natural schedule tends to get later and later, until I am going to bed at 4 or 5 and sleeping until 2 in the afternoon. I also find that Concerta helps me get going in the morning - apparently this is fairly common, as a lot of people with ADHD seem to have difficulty coming awake in the morning.

Before i had my son the earliest i would go to be would be around 3am and i wouldnt get out of bed until around 1-2pm. Now that i have my son (hes nearly 3 now) i try to get to sleep earlier but most nights i dont go to bed til after midnight and then its the biggest mission to get out of bed of a morning. Is there any treatment available for this?

I have never officially been diagnosed with DSPS, so I'm not having any official treatment for it - I take Ambien as needed, but my most frequently used treatment is my current job, which requires me to get up at 5:30 am. This basically means that I begin to get on my late schedule on weekends, don't get to bed on time on Sunday night, and get continuously more sleep deprived during the week, so that I eventually start getting to bed on time (or even early) just because I am so exhausted from the accumulated sleep deprivation. Then as soon as the weekend hits and I get enough sleep, I start staying up later and later until I get sleep deprived again during the next workweek. Not the best method of dealing with the situation, I know...

Ambien is helpful for getting to sleep, but it won't necessarily solve the problem in the long run (meaning I still tend to get on that schedule whenever I don't take it and I'm not overtired from work). The Ambien doesn't solve the problem of helping me to get out of bed in the morning, either - if anything, it can sometimes make it worse if it hasn't worn off yet. Ambien or not, I have a really hard time getting up and getting to work in the morning - after it takes me about 5 alarms going off at different times to get me out of bed, I find myself practically falling asleep in the shower because I am so tired. I try to take my medication first thing because it helps me focus and wake up a bit better, but it is still hard, and I am still usually running late in the morning.

I have read somewhere that a certain kind of bright light therapy is used for DSPS, as it is with seasonal affective disorder, etc - I read that on the website of the company that was selling the lights, though, so it wasn't exactly an unbiased source, but you might want to look into whether it's a validated treatment method (and a more pleasant one than having a job that requires you to get up at 5:30!).

Let us know if you find any useful info - I should look into treatment for DSPS too.

P.S.: Just a warning NEVER to take Ambien when you will be really short of sleep - I took it one night when I couldn't get to sleep but I only had 3 hours left before waking up. Besides the fact that I wouldn't have woken up for work if my bf hadn't dragged me out of bed, I ended up calling my father about something that made absolutely no sense, while I was driving to work, at 6:30 in the morning when he was still in bed - worse still, I had NO MEMORY of doing so afterward. As best i can figure out, this means that I basically called him while i was DREAMING (i.e. asleep but awake) while driving down the highway in lots of traffic - definitely not a good thing to do. I have read that this kind of thing can be a side effect of Ambien. I have never had a problem with this, though, when I got enough sleep during the night when I took it.

Jeez, my problem is that I can't get out of bed to get started. Even with the Ritalin that my psych prescribes (30mg daily)

Is 30mgs too low for a daily dosage. My doc is slow to increase dosage

30 mg is a high dose; can go as high as 60 mg, need to speak to your doctor. How long have you been on Ritalin? I wish you the Best!

I had to quit taking effexor. It made me jumpy and grouchy. I take amatryptline every night so I can sleep. My brain doesn't slow down enough otherwise. Whimsy

I do not take medication, but I have major sleep issues. I am so hyper and awake at night that I am awake until 4am or 5am. Its doing my head in as I do shift work and need to get a decent sleep. My Doc said she did not want to give me sleeping tablets as they are so addictive. So instead gave me a sheet on insomnia and sent me on my way. I have done everything it suggests

1. Bath before bed
2. No caffine after 6pm
3. No food 1 hour before bed
4. No distractions 1 hour before bed
5. Hot drink at bedtime
6. Try and go to bed at the exact same time every night(well I have attempted that)
7. Not getting up when and if I can not sleep
8. Herbal Sleeping Tablets

I am at my wits end. I have just came off of 2 weeks on Night Shift and I was up until 430am this morning. Planning on a Hot Bath which I will run very shortly

I know how you are all feeling. I have been like this for about the last 12 years

They say number 7, you SHOULD do. You should get up and change rooms if you cannot sleep, then try again later on.

I have a lot of sleeping issues, insomnia to be precise, I wake up several times, I can't settle and get to sleep, blah blah. I was awake until 8am this morning then went to sleep, woke up a few times too. I tend to do that a lot. Fail to sleep at night, too tired to make it through the day. I've been up for days on end before. It's worse on some days, better on others.

I'll be taking a Zopiclone tonight to try and help me drift off. I was prescribed 14 tablets to take every other night. I'm probably down to the last few now. But short term medication, I find, doesn't help all that much, as you're just back to square one when you are done with them.

Joy huh?

I take Adderall XR. I've reported here before that when I go off this medication that I start having sleep issues again. This past week I again decided to go off it for a while. (why...I have no idea just wanted to give my system a break for a while and remember what it is like to be ADHD) Anyway, for the past 2 nights I've experience sleep disturbances. For whatever reason-- taking a stimulant helps me sleep at night.
