Well, basically I've wondered for years if I have Asperger's on top of my mental illness dx. I have some traits similar to it, and some traits not.
The problem is I think I've gotten away from the subject, but last Sunday at church in the social room the people at the table next to me were talking about it and I got so triggered I had to leave service. I feel like I've got to have some resolution here. I brought it up with a psychatrist who said that I was a little like that, but not completely, he didn't want to diagnose me. On the other hand, I've had two therapists in a row that believed I had it and wanted to do therapy for it. My friend with a psychology degree says if I'm an Aspie, I'm very high functioning and I have too much empathy. I am going to have a new pdoc next year, but I don't know what she would say. All the self tests online say that I'm on the border of having it or not. I really wish this would end.

Why is it so important to know if you are Aspergic or not? It's not as if you can take a pill for it.
I'm sensing that you are afraid that you might be Aspergic. But even if you are diagnosed as Aspergic, that simply means you've been Aspergic all your life. Or are you afraid of the stigma that goes with being Aspergic? Love your Sonic!

Finally remembered this thread.
The main reason why I want to know is that I want to make sure I get the right support. I go to internet support groups and feel stupid if I don't really know if I have the condition or not. Heck, I doubt the condition I am labeled with a little bit and I sometimes question the real life support group I go to, so I don't know if I really could be sure either way. I've always felt different and I still feel like I'm searching for others like me..... search has come up fruitless so far.

Well, I have the obsessive interest symptom the most. To give you an example, I once went so far as to get a dial-up internet connection on a phone number I didn't even own to download Sonic-related videos in the past, I go to insane lengths over my obsessions. I am also sensory sensitive.
But I have a good handle on reading facial expressions and stuff. In face I'm emotionally over expressive and stuff which is kind of opposite. My new therapist said that when she was talking to me, asperger's was in her mind a little, but I wasn't really like that.

When I was diagnosed, I went through a 2 day testing, plus a person close to me was interviewed. They didn't take diagnosing lightly. The 2 psychiatrists I had since DISAGREE with the diagnosis, BTW.... And they think they can know after seeing me once a year for an hour. I really don't think a doc can diagnose you unless you are a clear cut case, from just seeing you.
For me a diagnosis has made a BIG difference, because it has given me a legal right to different kinds of support that I really needed. Now all countries don't have that I know (I'm not in USA). BTW, I also have empathy, but I still have Asperger's. And just your Sonic piccie gave you away..!! OK not seriously, but almost. |

Well.... I just know I'm different in some way. I think the way things are right now, they have a label on me and that's good enough for insurance to treat me so they don't care too much about putting more labels on.
