I had a doctor's appointment today and she told me that I definitely had Asperger's Syndrome. I've got so many mixed emotions on this, but the ones that stand out the most are surprise and shock. I'm the last person I thought would be on the Autism Spectrum (I'm sure that sounded arrogant, for which I apologize.).

Something tells me I'm going to have a bit of trouble coming to terms with this diagnosis.

I would say I'm sorry, but you have not suffered a loss IMO.

It is very scary, but learning something about yourself does not change who you are. That moment did not transform you.

What you do have now with a dx is an answer to a lot of why's and a direction to go in to help with your issues.

I am not saying this should ever be taken lightly, but you are still you.

I agree with the above person. And you're probably brilliant! I read that one of the Miss America contestants has mild Autism. She's bright, talented, attractive, and has become socially adept and poised enough for a pageant life.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I'm on a pity party. It just took me off guard is all.

How did the psychiatrist figure out that was it? My mom thinks I have it, but I disagree because I know social cues, I just hate social situations. And I was outgoing as a child.

They did a psychological test and that's how they figured out what it was.

I don't know you so I don't know what surprised you.

Before I was diagnosed I saw myself as a tad AS. I think in a way it is still correct and was even more correct in the past when diagnosis was more stringent. If I look at DSM I barely fit the criteria, you need to shoehorn me in.

Still I know I have always been different. But when I grew up, autism was only severe autism and as fascinating as I found it I wasn't that of course. Yea so in a way I was surprised as well.. LOL.

AS has been seen as a diagnosis among boys so the more girlie type of AS is kind of just starting to be understood. It's the same with ADD, girl ADD was totally misunderstood but now they know more about it.

I was also diagnosed through tests, which I appreciate. I don't like when a DX is the doc's guesswork, has been like that with my misdiagnoses in the past, they just guessed......
