Do you?

I've been asked this on forms before... and I'm torn, because on the one hand I know it does interfere with my life and it has prevented me from getting a job, on the other hand I don't think of myself as disabled really... like despite the above, I'm not disabled enough? I still sort of have my mental faculties, I'm not physically fantastic but I'm not incapable... I guess "disabled" has a certain connotation in my mind of being, say, someone in a wheelchair or someone with Downs Syndrome or something like that, not someone like me...

If it affects your life so you cannot get a job, yea then it is a disability. I think you need to make peace with that word.

Hi Pandoren, it took me two years to start ticking that box with a yes. This is actually different from being registered as disabled. That is why it says "do you consider yourself ...". Yes I DO! Yes I feel guilty, yes I manage my job, barely. But it affects my life on every single level.

There are also advantages to do this:
* They cannot fire you due to any problems that might occur because of your "disability"
* They have to make adjustments or help you in your work process.

My advice - take this chance. A lot of employers and companies are disability friendly, if that makes sense. In other countries Mental Health is not even something that is part of the Health Care system. This question is there to help you.

Good luck.

I don't feel disabled, but some people disable me.

I have never checked that box, and I think it opens a can of unknown worms, but, yeah, I do consider myself disabled. I was just looking at something called "Situational Judgment" testing. I may have to do this. I don't see how I could ever pass it, because of the undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder I've fought all my life.

Yes and no. I have a lot of disabilities that affect my life and make things difficult, but if I try my best to work around them which I can do pretty well. I don't openly consider myself disabled because I don't want the negative stigma that comes with mental disabilities. Being labeled as disabled might work against and give me more trouble than help.

I do because I know I am. Do i let it limit me and use it as an excuse to get away from responsibilities? No way. I still try to go to the store and buy groceries when I need to, I still try to find work even though I haven't been able to even get to an interview thus far. Also, by finally admitting disability, I can finally get acceptance and some much needed accommodations too.

I've been tested for a learning disability but didn't think I was. " disabled" now that I'm newly on disability (3 weeks now) for schizoaffective/bipolar type and PTSD I have to check that box. And I'm ok with that. As said above, it disturbs your whole life so,yes. I have a disability.

My acute senses and anxiety definitely make life difficult.
