I was curious if you think adults with autism get enough support in their lives.

In a word, No.

No, not even close.

I went with a company called Blackwood. Some care workers aren't that trustworthy or knowledgeable. I'm certainly not a lover of Autism Initiatives any more, for obvious reasons.

Heck no.

They also don't get the support to get diagnosed with it in the first place either & without the Dx, it's even harder to get the help that's needed especially when the person is living alone & has no ability to be financially responsible....makes the whole thing even worse.

Hello,
They haven't but they can find support in associations. |

I know in the UK it is a very very specialized area which = most mental health care professionals knowing diddly squat in a worthwhile capacity. As such the support can be erratic and confused. Also = few diagnostic clinicians to spot the dx in the first place if it's not picked up on in the early years... and for those of us who were born in the 70s (80s) and before, we pretty much slipped through the net as it was barely known about.

My brother had Autism and he got know help at all. Of course that was a long time ago, but he ended up in a mental hospital. Not a place for that.

I guess I'm about to find out, but my guess would be no. Especially since for most of us, autism wasn't a thing when we were kids, and if not severe it seems much harder to identify in adults. I've been going to counselors since before I was 10, and psychiatrists since 14. I'm now 25 and had a psychiatrist say for the first time he thinks I'm on the spectrum.
My insurance should allow me to get decent support now that I know, but it really sucks that I didn't know sooner. Now I have to play catch-up and try to change patterns I always thought were normal, things my brain adapted to because no one could tell me what was wrong or what I should do. So sorry it took so long. It is good that you know now and I'm glad you finally got the right answer. Keep going you can do it with the help of your psychiatrist and hopefully a really good therapist.

Definitely not enough support, in either the diagnostic or post-diagnostic phases. For both sexes, but females are so overlooked. I probably would have qualified for a diagnosis of Asperger's 10 years ago when my daughter was diagnosed with HFA. But I was so focused on her... My therapist acknowledges that I am on the spectrum somewhere, so there is at least that validation. But I would not ever consider seeking a diagnosis because...to what end? There aren't even enough services for my 15 year old. (sigh).

nope. i think it could possibly due to as children they have their parents to help (usually).. as adults..... well it seems where im at currently, they dont seem to realize that those children will grow into adults... maybe at that point they will start providing the supports that is needed with adults too.
one example would be the service dogs for autism.... i have yet to find a place anywhere in the US that doesnt have an age limit of 17yrs old and younger. none are there for adults because they lack the funding for that(what i was told by one of those who worked with and provided service dogs for autism. )(this was a few years ago) . ![]() but i actually have a good behaviorist now, so hopefully i'll be more hopeful.
