I’m sorry. I understand. My family doesn’t see autism in me either, although I’m diagnosed with high functioning autism spectrum disorder. They only think of people on the lower functioning scale.

I understand the frustration. It is difficult to communicate your feelings or struggles to people who either dismiss your experiences because their understanding of Autism predates current knowledge-or, worse, is derived exclusively from popular culture-or belittles them. I have encountered the same problem with Tourette's-people's ignorance of the disorder, I mean to say. Just as Autism brings to the average, uninformed mind "Rain Man", it is coprolalia which the average person equates to Tourette's. I have a small lecture-generally not exceeding two minutes-prepared for those who do not understand Tourette's very well and have had to recite it many times.
Have you perhaps thought of making a Power-Point which very briefly explains ASD and then emailing it to everyone mecessary (wohever they may be) so that you can refer them to the power-point if any annoying statements arise? It can be very fun gathering information on a topic and organizing them upon a Power-Point. It is even more fun writing essays, but most people do not like to read essays and instead prefer concise presentations. |

You are right. It is actually impossible for anyone to get your level of frustration. Even those of us on the spectrum have a difficult time understanding each other’s battles. Some of us have hearing difficulties; however, others do not.
Autism can be both ablessing and a curse. While THEY will never get us, they will also be in awe of the rare gifts we each bring to the table.

My belief is that such ignorance fosters evil. Or at least the ability & self-"justification" by the "normal" people out there for how they treat those who are different from themselves. Their wrong behavior, disenfranchising those who most need their understanding & compassion, is plain evil. That's what you really hate.

Im a teacher and I've heard other teachers label kids 'not right in then head' when I know for a fact that child is on the spectrum. Its sickening. Some people just suck. Then to be labeled myself as a burden and dumb because I struggle to communicate well (Im not the most articulate). I want to scream at them to educate themselves yet I know its pointless because their ignorance is a choice. Just another reason to break some else down so they can feel a little better about themselves.

Just curious do you understand those without autism or asperger's any better than they understand you?
Knowing & understanding is a two way street. Most people have no idea a person is aspie or not & usually people don't go around waving a flag that says "I'm aspie research it so you know why I am the way I am" I agree that close family should research to understand but even researching doesn't always explain exerything or give a good understanding because being aspie isn't a cookie cutter thing....the spectrum is broad & so are the different behaviors so it is not always easy to tell what is aspie behavior or not. Kinda difficult to get a good understamding of something like thst when even T's don't have that kind of knowledge or understanding

about something and he basically said well my grandma has autism and she's not like you. That's not exactly what he said I can't remember but that's pretty much what he said and it made me mad. It's like you said, autism and aspergers is a broad thing and he obviously doesn't undersatnd that cause he's ignorant and I'm sure some research would help with that problem. I would've said that at the time but I didn't have the words so I didn't say anything and I just got mad. I don't know if that would've helped cause this person is closed minded. Some people just aren't very understanding and they're close minded. Its the people like that I'm mad at. I'm sorry if there's so much hate in my post. I was just really angry and I wanted to express my feelings. So I'm sorry if I made anyone feel bad. |
