Or do some other kind of repetitive movement?
I wring my hands a lot. If I don’t have something in my hands, or if I’m standing, then I’m doing it. For me it’s not really an anxiety thing, I just don’t know what to do with my damn hands. I’ve gotten a flack for it before. One therapist told me I looked weird when I do it At work on Saturday I was just about to clock in and my coworker who is always in my business and staring at me yet pretends to be nice was standing across from me. I’m assuming she was staring at me. I was wringing my hands slightly and I thought the table was hiding it. She blurts out in a very judge mental way “what are you doing with your hands?” I wanted to say “I was about to flip you off.” Instead I just said “nothing. I’m just cold.” I don’t understand why everyone at work is so darn focused on what I do. |

I wring my hands too, but I think it's related to anxiety... I tend to shake or twist my legs because they don't really have anything to do though.
Saying that something like wringing your hands is "weird" is mean and unprofessional, so I'm sorry that has happened to you.

I ball up Kleenex or fidget with my hands. I think it's more anxiety than my Aspergers in that case.

I fidget with my hands a lot and occasionally will flap them. I agree that it's a very unprofessional thing for a professional to say.

I do a lot of stuff with my hands. Interlace the fingers of both hands, kind of like when people crack their knuckles, except I don't crack them. I like making a fist and squeezing my fingers, except the thumbs are extended out. I like to use my thumb to touch each finger at a time. Also it feels good to bend my wrists. What feels the best is twiddling and fidgeting an object in my hand. I always thought that was for anxiety and stress.

Yeah, I do this too. I usually end up hurting my hands.
Have you ever tried a stim toy, like a spinner ring? or even playing with a pen? Sorry to hear you've had an ableist therapist! ![]() When people tell me I look weird doing it I'm just honest with them and say that my brain is different and it helps me regulate sensory input. |

I had a fidget spinner. I lost interest in it the same time the rest of America did. A pen really helps. Pretty much having anything in my hands helps. Holding onto my phone helps even if I’m not using it. My kindle is great because I’m holding onto that and watching TV shows on it for hours. If I get tired I’ll put it on my lap and if my hands get restless I’ll just pick it up again.
Pretty much just standing or walking without having anything in my hands is the problem. |
