I'm very nervous about my first appointment tomorrow. I have talked with counselors but not psychiatrist. I was wondering if i should share the results of my bipolar test and my anxiety and ocd test with the doctor. I don't want to be locked up. I have a family who is important to me and I could not stand to be away from them. This is probably an irrational fear but It is a worry of mine. So if anyone has shared their test results with there doctor before or had an experience with it please let me know. Thanks again for being so welcoming to a new member.

I'm assuming you are talking about the internet tests you have taken here? No doctor is going to put you in the hospital based on that. But sure, you can share them as a way to communicate what is going on with you.

A doctor will only put you in the hospital if he/she thinks you are a danger to yourself or others. Don't be afraid to share your results from the internet if you think it will help, but the pdoc will most likely be more interested in you telling him/her the symptoms you are having. Good luck!!

Each time I was considering seeing a psychiatrist I was wondering if bringing the tests would be useful, too.
In the end I didn't but that was more due to the fact I had a crash and was really messed up, said hello to a hospital, prior to finally seeing a pdoc. farmergirl and grizmom are right. Don't be scared, you won't get 'locked up' based on those tests. the pdoc will want to go through your symptoms, if they thinks you might be in danger, that's the only time they'll bring up going to hospital. When I went to ER, I was there for half a day but didn't get admitted because I didn't admit to my self harming/sui thoughts (naughty me). So that said, don't be afraid to tell the pdoc everything. They can't diagnose and treat you for the best possible recovery without the truth. If you're worried about telling the pdoc a certain thing because you're worried about hospitalisation, think of it this way. The sooner they know it's a problem, they can manage it so you're probably not likely to end up where you rather not be. Don't tell the pdoc, they can't help you as well as they could and you're putting yourself at risk of having to recover in a hospital (which isn't a 'bad' thing - sometimes, **** happens and you need it to get well again). |

I seriously doubt you are going to be involuntarily committed. In the fifteen years I've seen doctors, therapists, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners for mental health issues none of them ever brought up the subject of inpatient treatment unless I did. Unless you express a specific and credible intention to physically hurt yourself or other people their first priority is to help you function better in your normal daily life.

I think Firestar's post hits the nail on the head.
You have made the most difficult step already - understanding there is a problem and setting up an appointment with a p-doc. From here on, things can only imporve, as you have reached out for help. Work with the doc, be honest about everything and together you will be able to do whatever necessary to make you feel better. The first time I ever went to a p-doc he said to me he'd recommend I go to hospital for a few days. At first it freaked me out and I refused categorically. As I was not a threat to anyone, just really depressed, he was prepared to bargain with me. I eventually went in a few days later, after having spoken to people who'd gone through it. I think I needed it - I was put on my first lot of anti-depressants and the hospital allowed me a few days of to relaxed and get away from it all. I don't think I'd take my test results along - as long as you are open and honest to the doc, he will arrive at the same deduction as your internet test results concluded. |
