Back story: Haven't slept in 6 nights and woke two mornings ago with 3o+cuts on my arms that I don't remember doing. My pdoc told me to go into the ER.

Since I really didn't want to be admitted they told me that that they would let me go home and try some different meds there and that I HAD to see my doctor no later than weds. If I didn't feel better and couldn't get in to see my pdoc than I would have to come back to the hospital and be admitted.
They were so nice trying to come up with a safe plan for me that would let me stay home.
They prescribed Ativan and a new sleeping med, Rozeram (sp?). I've already taken 1 ativan at the hospital and it hasn't done anything for me. So I'm about to take my second dose of it along with the sleeping meds. We shall see.
Wish me luck!

Good luck... being in the hosp sucks but not sleeping sucks too. I hope the meds work out and you can get back on track.

I hope the rozerem works for you! I take 8mg rozerem with 10mg ambien and 1mg clonazepam every other night for sleep; on the other nights I take 100mg seroquel with 1mg clonazepam. Alternating the two combos seems to help them work better and for longer. Sweet dreams!

Thank you for your positive thoughts
Griz, I think that sounds like an excellent combo. If I can get into see my pdoc tomorrow I am going to ask him about doing a combination like that. It makes sense since you do not become so used to the meds that they stop working.

I also just want to say I've only posted a few times on here but that everyone has really made me feel so much better...and dare I say normal?

I'm glad you went in and that they are trying to accommodate your needs. In my experience, Ativan works well. I've been given substantial doses of it in the ER twice. It does the trick. Of course, receiving it quickly through the IV is much different than the pills, but I think the pills work pretty well too. For me, they do a much better job of taking the edge of than Xanax.

Hope you feel better!

I've been given Ativan before, but warned it is highly addictive and one cannot take too much, as it can stop you from breathing. (Your involuntary reflexes no longer work). Well, mine were taken away from me :-( But they really worked well.

I'm glad you took responsibility and went to the hospital. Moreover, i hope you find a solution quickly and manage to get some well deserved sleep

I hope you continue to be safe. It seems like you are willing to work at it and that's a good part of the battle right there.

Just wanted to check in...did you manage to get any sleep? Any luck getting in with your pdoc? Let us know how you're doing! I'm hoping that right now you are in a deep peaceful sleep!

Wow, I am impressed that they were so kind to you. Whenever I go to the ER for psych issues they are not very nice to and then I feel guilty taking up a bed because there are "real" sick people.

Good luck with the meds.

I've always had good interactions in the ER, probably because the ER I use for psychiatric emergencies is in the same hospital where I go inpatient. It does make a difference.

We are lucky we live close to a hospital that has a Behavioral Emergency Center. You do have to go through the ER to get there but once they realize you have mental health issues they make you stand right by triage until a nurse comes to bring you to the BEC as they call it. Still it's pretty embarrassing standing there waiting while the police officers there keep an eye on you as if I am going to do something. I just wanted to tell him, look the only thing I am capable of is talking to you non-stop while I pace in front of your stand. lol

Last night I managed to get 3 and half hours of sleep. I fell asleep fast with the meds but woke up and then couldn't go back to sleep. I tried it again tonight and now I'm not even the slightest bit tired after 2mg of Ativan and 8 mg of Rozarem.
I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with my pdoc. When I talked to him he said that if the sleeping meds weren't working and my lithium levels were not low that he may tell me I can't do this at home. I am pretty much prepared now for that answer and feel okay with this. Over 7 days, while I enjoy the energy, logically I know I am starting to do things that are unsafe and I just want it to stop.

Schwandy - congrats to you for dealing with this situation like you have. I do not envy you having to deal with the hectic mania that you do. After 2 days I'd be pulling my hair out (not literally) as I'd be finished.

I also tend to feel guilty being in hospital when I'm not "sick".
