and now Im super paraniod and freaking out. I didnt want to leave him at all.

Friday night me 15 month old was very fussy and didnt sleep well. He normally sleeps 12 hours a night and this time he only slept a 5 or 6. He was up early so I was up early. He was crying so loudly but totally limp. I gave him tylenol and laid with him until he went back to sleep. When he woke up he seemed fine. He played outside even. So I felt in his mouth and there is a 1 year molar poking through. I gave him so motrin and we went to the water park which we do every Saturday. Anyways on the way there the kids in the back seat said he was twitching but when I pulled over he was fine. I should have turned around and taken everyone home and him to the doctor then. I'm not feeling like the best mom at all. So then we get to the park and usually I let him hang out with grandmom but I stayed around most of the time. Finally I went to the lazy river and decided it was time to go home. I was walking back to our spot and here comes by sister-in-law running and screaming about my son. I ran to my mother-in-law and took him. He was so lifeless yet his body was twitching. His eyes were rolled in the back of his head. I ran to the First Aid booth along with workers from the park. The put ice on him to cool him down and he started to come back to me. Then he started crying. Finally. It was so scary. Once his temp was down to 99 we rushed him to the closest ER. They gave him tylenol and fluids by IV. He was still crying. weak but crying. We went home and I was up with him until 4am scared to go to sleep because it may happen again. Once I did go to sleep I passed out until 10am. My sister-in-law brought him to me because he was fussy. I had him all day in my arms (except when I ran to the store) he didnt want down to walk or to play he only wanted me to hold him. My body was so tense and tight from the stress. Maybe these are common but I was not prepared to see my son that way. Today he is at the daycare and I have already called twice and want to call again. I am obsessing over him and super worried and anxious and tense. I need a anxiety pill and muscle relaxer at this point. Maybe a bottle of wine or something narcotic. I dont care what it is I am just so scared because they never did figure out even why his fever was up in the first place. So what if it happens again when he goes outside to play at daycare. Am I just being paraniod and over protective now? Its just that this is all my fault and I feel like I could have prevented it.

Big ssss, kadesgirl, how scary that must have been!!! What did they say at the ER? Did they give you any indications of things to watch for, or did they think it would be ok from then out? If they thought it likely to happen again, they probably would have admitted him, yes? There may be some comfort there.

they said to keep him out of the heat for a few days and that the fever may have been caused by a viral infection. They also said if it happened again to bring him back right away and to give him tylenol, and motrin for fever. ugh But they didnt take any tests or anything and I think they should have. I'm sure he will be fine now, but I'm not really that sure because I cant get him out of my head. I think I am going to call the daycare again. They also said if it happened again to bring him back right away and to give him tylenol, and motrin for fever. ugh

(((Kadesgirl09)))So sorry to hear your young son was so sick. That must have been so scary to watch this happen. Do the doctors think it was because he had a high fever? I hope he'll be all better soon and never happen again.

Febrile seizures are scary to see, but lots of little ones have them at some point. Nothing you did caused the seizure, okay? Usually it's a a toddler that caught a viral infection, their temperature spikes quickly and they seize. The vast majority of the kids never have another seizure in their lifetime.

I know its scary to see your sweet baby like that...but he's fine now and you are a good mommy.

thank you amazon mom. i called the day care again and they said he was playing and they have given him plenty of fluids. Maybe he is just clinging to me now because I have babied him the last few days. I'll have to break him of that because I cant hold him all the time. But its so tempting right now. Im just glad they said he was playing at daycare. Thanks for the comments.

My children had high fever convulsions. It seems that it runs in the family as my little great grand daughter had one recently.
It is more accurately caused by a fast rising fever. So at the first sign of a fever it is good to give him the Tylenol. If it is high already give put him in a lukewarm bath and letting it cool will keep him more comfortable. Keeping his head cool is helpful too. Warm covers will make the fever higher.
Your son might have been weakened by the seizures so maybe that is why he wanted to be held.
These are usually not harmful and if you keep watch whenever he has a fever it should be ok.
The key is to keep the tylenol every 4 hours around the clock. This way the fever will not spike.
Not your fault..especially if this was not a problem with your other kids.

I found this site that should help ease your worry from the "National Institute of Neurological Disorders" which says it comes with a high temperature (usually over 102F) but no damage is done by the seizure to effect the child:
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/f...e_seizures.htm

Some information for the future: Get a good children's thermometer so you can monitor your childs temperature. Guessing & hand on the forhead isn't as accurate. Also, a cool bath to lower the temp along with the tylenol can help, & the summer weather adds to the temp when they are already running one, so it's best to keep children in a cool place when running a temp. But in reality, a childs temp can spike even when doing all these things & cause a febrile seizure....no guarantees. All will be fine in the future I am sure.

thanks so much for the website and the advise! I let the daycare know to check his temp before taking him outside and I will do the same at home. Thanks for the assurance too!

I understand freaking out but really not your fault. All little kids give their parents at least one really good scare. I rolled off a changing table, my cousin Luke got run over by a snow-boarder when he was skiing...every kid I know has had some major unexpected parental nightmare and they are all fine now. Even if he had had the seizure while actually in the hospital I don't think there is even a lot that the doctors could have done.
Thanks for this!

Best advice I can give, having work in a pediatric ER for 3 years.... if your child starts to have fever (greater than 100.4F oral or rectal) start to give Tylenol and ibuprofen every other 3 hours. For example: noon temp 102F. Give Tylenol, 3:00pm give ibuprofen, 6:00pm give Tylenol, 9:00pm give ibuprofen. What this does is prevent the temp from ever being allowed to spike. Tylenol can wear off at just over the 3 hour mark so it does still give about an hour where his temp may be able to rise too quickly causing the seizure. ibuprofen is the same way... it's to be given every 6 hours but temps can start to spike at about the 5th hour, again allowing for seizure. By alternating meds every 3 hours, you're avoiding an spike in temp and you're also staying safe with dosing as each dose of the same med will be 6 hours apart. Ibuprofen and Tylenol work completely differently and so giving them 3 hours apart will in no way cause harm to him. Hope this helps. Just because he has had 1 febrile seizure does not mean he has a seizure disorder (which I assume you know by now), nor does it mean that he will ever have a seizure again. He could, but I have never seen this Tyleno/ibuprofen method not work. Parents love it because their kid is less cranky and kida love it because they don't feel as bad. Hope this helps... just a suggestion.

My son has a febrile seizure when he was a toddler as well. He had a high fever and the doctor said the seizure was caused by the fever spiking. It is frightening, but not harmful according to the doctor. The key is getting the fever down and you did that by being attentive and a good mom. You did all the right things.

By the way, my son never had another seizure and he has had many many fevers since.
Thanks for this!
