I was diagnosed as ADHD when I was 7 years old. I have been on medication for it since then. As an adult I was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. Back October my pdoc went out of practice and I tried to make it without my bipolar meds and my ADHD meds. That did not work out that well since I ended up in the hospital in February for 5 days!

But here's the problem: my new pdoc is not treating me for my ADHD and says it is uncontrolled bipolar that is causing my symptoms. I trust my pdoc because I worked with him professionally for 7 years. But I honestly think he is wrong on this. How do I convince him otherwise? Any ideas?

Do you have your records from the previous doc? If you've responded well to the meds for ADHD in the past, I would think this is your best argument. I would get a hold of your records. They should still be available even though discontinued practice in October, definitely worth getting a hold of.

I know BP symptoms at times can mimic ADHD and vice versa. It is a gray area. I know at one point when BP meds weren't working we explored this possibility by taking ADHD meds and because of my reaction to the meds, discovered this wasn't the case; it truely was BP. Sometimes that is the only way to tell. If BP meds alone aren't working, for me it is worth trying and the doc thought so too in this case.

I can definitely sympathize though with having a doc that isn't listening; have had those before too.
Thanks for this!

Sword Fight?

Tell them what worked in the past for you, and how you are struggling with it now. Be persistent. Sometimes we know what we need. Especially, if we've been complaining about the same problems for a while.

I think the others have given you great advice and I can't really think of anything else atm...so just here to say good luck with the pdoc, and I hope he will listen to you and give the ADHD meds a chance!

I should call and get a copy of my records from my old pdoc. That is an excellent idea! I never thought of that for some reason. Thanks everyone for your advice and help. And I just may bring my sword to my next pdoc appointment on Monday!!!
