Recently it occured to me that with the exception of a tiny dose of Prozac that was suggested by my former p-doc, everything that I currently take successfully was something I asked for. The newest thing is Topamax that is still in the mail and I have no idea whether it will be successful, but Lithium, Geodon, and Amitriptyline are all a godsend and I asked for all three myself.

And I have a long list of unsuccessful drugs in my signature, drugs which were prescribed to me on the initiative of this or that doctor and did not work out for this or that reason.

So analyzing this I come to the conclusion that I am much more successful than my various doctors in prescribing, with the one very strong exception of Prozac which has been a godsend without side effects.

How about you?

When I was diagnosed I asked to be put on something and they put me on Lamictle which I was allergic to. He wanted to put me on risperidol (sp?) but I was nervous about that one and my husband didn't like that idea. So, I asked to be put on lithium because it's been around forever and side effects are well documented.

The abilify I didn't ask for that but that was pre-diagnosis by about 2 years. After I went off it my OB tried to put me on prozac but I was suspricious that I might have bipolar so I didn't want to take an AD by itself just in case.

It goes both ways. Sometimes I know I need them and ask for his medical help; sometimes he suggests meds as he sees I could use that help. We ALWAYS work together to make the decisions either way. I don't make the med suggestions though, as far as which med to prescribe; I'm no expert on meds.

At the time I was on Medicaid and having a really difficult time because of the trauma of losing custody of my oldest son. It was directly after the birth of my middle son.

At the hospital the psychiatrist put me on Abilify but no diagnosis, and then I was set up to go through the system to get in to see another psychiatrist. So they sent me to this social worker intern who did an interview with me and somehow decided to stick me in a group therapy thing that was for people who were court ordered to be in anger management.... Because I told her I was angry about losing my son.... >.>

Well these were people who were there because of crazy things. LIke one lady was there because she had held a woman's head by force so that it was smashed by closing bus doors. Another lady was there for physically abusing her disabled mother (I think she pushed her wheelchair down the stairs.) Another guy was there for breaking both of his girlfriend's legs with a crowbar.... so yeah.... it wasn't really where I belonged.

It was going to take 2 months to get in to see the psychiatrist, but after having the baby, my Medicaid ran out a month before I was supposed to be seen.

In the meantime, the Abilify was making me have crazy muscle movements, rapid heart rate, panic attacks, and all types of issues. So I went to my OB and was sobbing so he took me off the Abilify and gave me the Rx for prozac. Then his nurse tried for three hours to find a psychiatrist that could see me to no avail.... So, I never got in to see a psychiatrist and never filled the Rx.

I haven't changed meds in 2 years, except for him adding on a couple. It was his suggestion to do so. This past September, I did manipulate him a bit to get Provigil, but it was worth it. Too bad I can't do it to my back dr to get some hydrocodone. :P
