HELP please :(

what do you do when you parents don't believe that your bipolar and threaten to take everything you have away? your medicine? your car? your phone? tell your job your a drug addict for taking topamax? im so scared becasue i need my medicine. ive been in bed for a day crying no one understands........... i dont eat im fat i hate everything

It depends, how old you are.If your under 18 you can call CALL 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) then push 1 to talk to a hotline counselor. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The hotline counselors work with translators who speak 140 languages to help people who call and speak something other than English. All calls are anonymous. (The hotline counselors don't know who you are and you don't have to tell them.)

If your an adult, you can go to your family doctor or therapist and report the problem, they can set you up with a case worker, normally a social worker who would act as an advocate on your behalf.

If you can, get your pdoc to call and talk to your parents about your situation and condition. Or whomever prescribed the meds. Do this ASAP. The hotline is a very good idea as well. Threatening to take away meds prescribed by a doctor is no laughing matter. Tell your boss in confidence what is going on as a preemptive strike in case your folks call your work. Tell your boss its a personal matter, but you want him/her to know that you are not an addict (if that's the case) and you are willing to give the job all the attention it needs. Also assure him/her that this won't affect your work.

wait. your doctor doesn't believe you're bipolar but prescribes you bipolar meds? i'm confused.

I'm in somewhat of a similar situation... although I am an adult and no one is taking my things away. But, my doc prescribes me bipolar meds and then tells me I'm not bipolar. So I feel your pain. It is very very frustrating and depressing when no one believes you. It is what I've had to deal with for the last 4 years, and still going on, because of the stigma that is attached with mental health issues in the military.

Well, I think this goes back to the Label part of psych conditions.
I would definitely assume your pdoc is prescribing meds to counter the symptoms you are describing to him. Don't worry about the label, or what dx he wants to put down for you. I wouldn't even mention the word bipolar around my parents - just tell them you are not quite emotionally stable, and these meds are prescribed to help you.

Hide your meds and tell your parents you flushed them. Put them in a different bottle so you can show your parents the empty prescription bottle. I had to do that with my Adderall when I had a roommate who would take them on me to get high. It worked because she saw the empty prescription bottle and figured I was out and never found my stash in the asprin bottle

When I was married my husband did not believe in my illness, he refused to let me take my medicine or go to my doctor. I am sorry your parents don't believe you maybe you can go to a bookstore and get a book that explains to your loved ones what bipolar is. I can tell you from past experiences this illness is very hard to understand if don't have it. If they have a book maybe they can see in you what the book says bipolar is. It will get better.
