There is more to being bipolar than mood swings, like my current psychiatrist likes to point out every time i see him. However, with the mood swings a few things are necessary for it to be bipolar:

Hypomania (or mania- more severe) which is feeling really really good almost like nothing can stop you, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, and for me I laugh and joke around so much more (almost everything for me is funny!)

Normal - just that... a normal mood state (which I have not really been able to tell if I'm in a normal mood state or not, what defines normal? )

Depression - different levels of depression are present in everyone, but typically there are thoughts of suicide, uncontrollable emotions, and just your typical depression related thoughts (worthlessness, etc..), also increased need for sleep and/or constant fatigue.

What you are describing does not sound much like bipolar, switching from nice to mean sounds more like a personality disorder to me. But then again, I am not a doctor nor do I know exactly what you are going through or how you feel. This is just based on my own personal research into Bipolar Disorder.

robw has offered up some good information; I might add that there is also a bipolar spectrum which makes it even more difficult to diagnose - even for a doctor. Instead of focusing on the diagnosis, try focusing on the treatment. A lot of the treatments for BP are also used for other disorders, including the ones you said you're diagnosed with. Treatment tends to focus on symptoms, since there doesn't appear to be a cure for these kinds of disorders. What kind of treatment are you currently getting? And are they helping with your symptoms?

Bottom line is that it is less important what you're diagnosed with than it is whether your treatment is working or not.

Hi kikki27. For myself prior to being diagnosed the hypomania could cause my mood to change from nice to extremely angry. I found the anger came from reacting to someone or something, but my response would be amped up by 100. There are many different symptoms that can make up a bipolar diagnosis and it's best to speak to a Psychiatrist about it.

You may want to start tracking your mood to see if there is a pattern to it. I use this online one http://www.medhelp.org/land/mood-tracker

Are you on meds or attending therapy?
Maybe look into Borderline Personality Disorder. It often appears to overlap a lot with Bipolar, especially where the symptoms are concerned.

I know you asked us not to give you excuses - but we ARE NOT professionals and CANNOT give you a diagnosis.
Also bear in mind - you are still in your teen years, hormones are running amock and you are still getting to know yourself. There's a lot going on in your life.

Any of your current dx's could cause mood swings so it is hard to say. If you are in a social function and you have an anxiety attack it could affect your mood later. If you have an OCD tendenancy that you get up set with that will also change your mood. It really is hard to give a dx without being properly trained i.e psychiatrist.

There is no Cure for bi-polar or borderline personality disorder, and hundreds of other mental illnesses. While there is no cure with therapy, medications, self care (sleeping enough, eating healthy, excersize) you don't have to suffer the affects of any mental illness forever. Most people get better, not because it is curable...but because they finally have tools or a combination of tools, medications, therapy's, selfcare etc available to them, but that takes alot of dedication and time on your therapists, pdoc and your part.
Thanks for this!
