I have been taking prilosec to combat the acid reflux that I get from taking depakote. For the last day or two, I have felt breakthrough reflux, but not too bad. Yesterday I had an upset stomach most of the afternoon. In the middle of the night I woke up twice with reflux so bad, I had to lean over the bed because I thought I was going to throw up. I managed to swallow (gross) it and I think I breathed a little in because I had to cough for a little while to clear my lungs. This used to happen before I took prilosec, but has been fine since taking it.
This morning I still feel a little refluxy, so I ate just a banana for breakfast. Yuck. Does this mean I will have to go of Depakote? Reflux can't be good on a long term basis. |

They might be able to give you something else for the reflux. Try that first?

I have the same problem, but with seroquel xr. I take OTC meds when it becomes necessary. I have found it is starting to get better over time.

Maybe I can take two prilosecs each night until I feel better.

make sure you are taking the prilosec at least an hour before taking the depakote. Prilosec takes about an hour to reduce acid and put a nice protective lining in the stomach. Also take the depakote with some food, stuff like toast or crackers. This helps absorb the acide that the stomach makes from the chemical reaction to the depakote. Try not to eat or drink anything a couple hours from when you go to bed. That will help kept the acid level in your stomach to a low amount. Try sleeping with extra pillows, keeping your head above stomach level. That too will help with getting the reflux so bad at night. I think you can take Prilosec twice a day, is prescription strength, not OTC (over the counter) dose. Check with your doctor if it becomes really bothersome, but it sounds it already has.

Oh... okay, I have a question? I'm on 300 seroquel XR, and occasionally I've had something that never happened before (or not since I was a baby.) I've burped, and foamy acid comes up. I don't feel sick, and I have no warning... I've burped up on the pavement walking home, and in the kitchen doing the dishes, and it's taken me completely by surprise. Is this what you guys mean by acid reflux? Is that a side effect of the meds?
Sorry to bother you with such a disgusting question. I just wondered if anyone else had this. |

Mine is more like full on vomit, while I am sleeping, but essentially, yes it comes with no warning.
It has been better lately. Maybe I had missed a dose or two of Prilosec. I am being more careful about making sure I take it. |
