Wanted to ask the group about any probs you've had with memory loss. I've lost a great deal , short and long term, and wondered there was some science out there linking memory loss with bp. Or could it be related to the sporadic heavy drinking-or potentially a combination of both? Thanks.

Memory loss is one of my biggest symptoms. I'm gonna talk to my doctor about it when I go again. It's so bad I can't even remember my symptoms to tell the doc! |

During my recent episode of mania, as it was worsening I became terribly forgetful and had to write everything down that was important- if I remembered!
Before I was hospitalized I asked my Pdoc about it since I had never had that happen to me before. He said forgetfulness is a classic symptom of bipolar. He didn't specify whether it was because I was having an episode or not. However, prior to this I have never had this symptom so horribly before when I had only had hypomania or depression. My memory is coming back to me and I'm remembering things more easily, but it's been weeks and weeks.... and weeks!

I have brilliant memory... for some things. But for other? Not even talking about "crap, I forgot to pay bills" or "I went to walk a dog and forgot the dog at home" (this did not happen to me, but it is something i would do if I had a dog). I have problem to place my memories on timeline. I have to think hard to see when I graduated, when I met somebody, when I did this and that... parts of my life a blurr, or seem oddly distant, like they were not my memories. I still remember them quite vividly, but i have hard time placing them...

Memory loss is definitely a problem for me. I generally have to write down things unless they're present and immediate, because otherwise I won't remember at all. Combine that with the inability to concentrate on something and it's really frustrating.
And yet I still have a near-eidetic recall for anything involving navigation, or specific parts of my classical musician's training. Go figure.

I have some problem with memory when depressed. However, it is known that heavy drinking, even episodic, can impair memory. Put the two together and you have problems.

I'm glad for your question, because I didn't know. What with the gene for Alzheimer's (my dad & both grandmoms had it), being a recovering alcoholic, memory loss from statin drugs, & memory fog from BP meds ...
Huh?

Heavy drinking (sporadic or otherwise) + medications for BP + BP = memory issues. No doubt about it.

On the subject of memory, today I'm recalling the fall of 1997 when I had to leave a boat (my place of work) due to what I guess now were panic attacks. Shortly after my brother died, this happened. This episode was clearly not the very beginning of my problem with bp (and later alcoholism) but it now seems not at all coincidental Earlier in the year, my mother had unsuccessfully attempted suicide. I see now that ,to turn Sinatra's words on their head, "It was a very bad year."
Thanks to all who continue to listen here, for what it's worth. Its gotten me motivated to start thinking about solutions. |

Very good!... No sense in suffering needlessly. I've just recently been through what I would call....HELL. But, with time and several med adjustments am feeling quit well now.

i blame my total loss of memory recall on meds, because they coincided, i am certain i was misdiagnosed and given inappropriate meds,, and mine is not an isolated story. that was 22 yrs ago, and 6 years ago i started using an auditory (sound) technology sold by CenterPointe.com, called Holosync. it has almost restored my equilibrium, and this year my ability to recall stored information has begun to return. i hope all find a way to recover from memory loss and depression, and whatever torments you,,, Gus

I have major problems with my memory too. It's like that section of my brain is now made of swiss cheese. I had a really good memory before I went on meds though, so I tend to blame it on them.

My memory is inconsistent. Sometimes I have the best memory in the world and can remember some small detail 10 years ago but at the same time I can't remember something as simple as the date or the day of the week. Also my short term memory is horrible. I have had bad memory for many years..... I think and don't remember. One of the most recent funny examples of memory loss is that I was walking out to take out the garbage and forgot the garbage bag! Sometimes I forget why I am in a room. I walk in and don't remember why I am there. I am "only" 28 years young.

I finally remembered to tell my pdoc and he said tell my therapist. I told them my memory is really bad and she said do you have an example...Of course I COULDN'T remember. Finally it came to me...I had forgotten a couple of Dr's appts. I had to ask them to put it in my records. I am appealing my first denial for SS and I am just lost and feeling quite hopeless.
