We have known each other since we were kids, but only talked off and on so he wasn't a part of my life when I was going through the really tough parts as a teen. We got back into contact last year and met up and hung out a couple times and then I had a crisis and took off. So.. we started seeing each other in August of this year. We've been in a serious relationship since the beginning of September. I love him, he is the best boyfriend I have ever had and this is the healthiest, most open relationship. The problem is, while I know everything about him, he has yet to learn that I have various disorders. He knows of my anxiety.
I would like to tell him about my Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder once I have been on Lithium for a month. That will be December 29th. I just don't know how to go about bringing it up, or what to say. I want to help him look past any stigma and truly understand it, but I want to avoid scaring him or making it seem like it is a huge deal(hence waiting until the meds are working fully). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |

Its easiest to tell others about your dx when stable in my experience so they don't feel you're making excuses for your behaviors. Also, they see you are stable and rational, so they know you are doing your best to treat it. They will have a lightbulb moment looking back at the times you may have gone a little nuts.
When I told my boyfriend we were just getting started in our relationship. I said "there's something I need to tell you" (pause) "I'm bipolar." His response was "That's it?? I thought you were going to say you were a serial killer or something bad!" Its been 3 years. He loves me for me and understands that bipolar is a part of me. (Yes I know I'm not my disease, but we come as a package deal). He says it's ok as long as you are actively treating it Episodes and hospitalizations are bound to happen (and have) but he doesn't mind as long as i'm trying to help myself. Keep us posted on how that conversation goes. It is definitely scary, but its will come out eventually.
