I don't know if I am bipolar and I am going to discuss this with my psychiatrist but I wanted to know, is it possible to cycle in the same day? I felt kind of ultrahappy this morning, positive and lots of energy and then started crying after lunch and can't seem to do anything...I mean, where does mood swings end and bipolar start... Can you be really moody and not be bipolar...just some musings, would love to hear anyone's response on the subject.

Yes...and yes. You can cycle multiple times in a day (called ultra ultra-rapid or ultraradian cycling) and yes, you can be moody and not be bipolar. There may be other diagnoses that also result in severe mood instability. Your pdoc will be able to help sort it all out.
I hope you find some relief soon. ![]()

Yes, you can. I do frequently. Sometimes in an hour I'll be happy, depressed, irritable and just okay. I know it's a scary feeling but there are meds they can give to help control it. Let us know what your doctor says.

Good luck. I hope your pdoc can give you the answers that you want. The most common causes of volatile moods are bipolar disorder BP and borderline personality disorder BPD. Have a look at the definitions on the pysch central site- there is a lot of good info.
A major difference is that with BP the moods are caused by mixed up brain chemicals whereas in BPD it's more to do with how you think and respond to things... Meds and therapy are important for both but meds are more important for BP and therapy is more important for BPD. Just my thoughts on the two, others may have different opinions...
