Today I made a list of who I want to be and what I want to be able to do on a daily basis. I have a hard time doing things and it just feels like I have to have so much more effort to do things that other people just "do" like they don't even think about it. Like hygiene for example. It's hard for me to take showers and brush my teeth and stuff. I guess I just have very little energy because of the depression that I have most of the time, and when I'm hypomanic, I don't do the things that really matter cause I'm too focused on things that don't. So here are my lists.... that I am going to share with my T today.

Who I want to be...
  • Fit and healthy
  • Have a clean house
  • Independent
  • Better financially
  • Able to adapt in stressful situations
  • All A's in college
  • Good hygiene
  • Able to persevere to achieve goals

What I want to do every day...
  • Shower and hygiene stuff
  • Take care of my pets
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise
  • Clean the house
  • Go to school and do homework (when school starts)
  • Have a regular sleep schedule

I am so far away from what I want to be able to do, and it feels like it is so hard to be able to be that person I really want to be. I am so lethargic, overweight, lazy, depressed... I guess I am gonna just ask my T how to get there when I am all the way over here and feel like a failure.

I also want to comment on how smart you are listing "fit and healthy" as your goal, not "thin and healthy". "Thin" is not necessarily attainable, be it through hereditary obesity, psychoactive drugs, efficient microbes in the gut, or what not. "Fit" is an attainable goal. You can be fit at every size. I encourage you to look up HAES - Health At Every Size - approach that has been clinically proven to be superior in health outcomes to traditional weight-centric approaches.

Another weblink with a lot of support for those looking to get fit is www.myfitensspal.com . I've read stories there of people really getting into shape; I did myself - losing over 50 pounds and staying accountable to some small, attainable goals.

Great list. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

I read your post earlier today, and while I haven't had the best of days, I wanted to let you know how much I relate to what you're saying.

Major congrats on the list! Recognizing that you need one, and recognizing what you need is a HUGE step toward that person you want to be in your list! You should be proud of yourself

...........it is ok to take baby steps towards reaching the items on your list! Don't put too much pressure on yourself to achieve it all in short order. Good list!

I identify with that list. I'd like to accomplish many of the same goals.

I showed T my list and I don't think she understood that that is the "ideal" me, and I am nowhere near being that "perfect." She wants me to set up a reward system so that I can do all of those things now. I feel overwhelmed. She wants me to BE that person NOW... I don't think she understands how hard it is for me.

Well, if you can't transform yourself over night into someone else, there is no shame in that I would right now work on small steps, as Blue Poppy said, and then discuss and explain to your therapist next time you see her that this isn't a right-away thing. Tell her that is it distressing you to think about trying to do it all at once. Then she can better help you

But for now, just think of how awesome it is that you made the list! It is a step in itself that you did

Start simple with little steps. I've been using myfitnesspal and its really good for eating healthy and exercising regularly. I also use the nike app on my phone to measure the distance I walk and that helps motivate me. I find walking to be a good exercise and its easy to do regularly. Maybe aim to exercise 3 times a week at first rather than every day...

I think you need to go easy on yourself for not doing stuff when depressed. Its really hard to get motivated when your depressed and you need to reward yourself for everything that you do rather than beat yourself up over what you don't do. Some days getting out of bed is nearly impossible....

Be kind to yourself. I look forward to many more posts as you achieve your goals - remember one step at a time...
