This is going to be a bit immodest, but I have to get the point across. You will forgive me.

I have whined enough on this board about my body shape. Thanks for listening and support.

All the while, I have been the owner of the most beautiful yet unruly hair which can easily be turned into my biggest asset with the help of some dexterity... which I lack.

D. (friend/former lover, a poet): hair like Dante's Beatrice's.

Medium length, chestnut, with reddish highlights. Natural curl. I use an expensive line of hair products formulated for curly hair. I go to a salon that specializes in curly and wavy hair (and pay for it). My hairdresser studied under a person who studied under the author of this book that made a revolution in curly hair design. She sends me off with a gorgeous head of hair. And... I cannot emulate her work at home. I am not dexterous; I am awkward with my hands. Someone else, instead of whining, would have learned how to blow dry and style hair. Not me. I am also lazy. I just let it air dry. Of course, it is healthy (heat damages the hair) and one of the reasons, besides genetics, that I have such high quality hair is that I air dry it. But I have a blow dryer with a diffuser - that should be safe. I just do not use it, and when I use it I cannot reach good results. I keep saying to myself: "Go to YT, watch some videos on blow drying techniques" and ****ing do it, do it for 10 minutes every day like every other woman does it without even giving it a thought! Nope. So my hair is either a mess or a pony tail/braid, neither of which does it justice. And every day I think that I should start learning to style, but I keep postponing it. Unlike weight, this is totally within my control; I just lack some necessary motivation.

Maybe someone can send some motivation my way?

I'm with you, H-B! I've got lots of brunette/silver hair, long, wavy-to-curly, and I never do anything with it either. I let my son-in-law the stylist get his hands in it every now and again, but I can't even come close to replicating what he does and frankly, I don't like ANY style that takes more than 5 minutes to deal with.

My repertoire of hair "do's" is limited to a) braids, b) ponytail, c) updo held together by a large clip, and d) let it fly!

My hair ... Its absolutly white/ grey But I color it ever 2-3 weeks .. ( as you can see in my photo.) I leave it wrapped in a towl to pull as much water out as I can for about 10 minuets.

I just blow dry it and then use a flat iron over it really quick and im done ,, the entire process takes maybe 15 mins , I also cut my on hair , ( my mother was a hairdresser and she passed away)

I dont trust anyone to cut my hair as the few times I have gone to a hair dresser that gets raving reviews I hate the outcome.

I have the curly FRIZZY hair.....it started turning gray after my first knee surgery when I was in my late 30's.....then more grey with each surgery after. I hated short hair from the time I was in grade school when my mom first had my hair cut, so I swore at that time never to have short hair again.

Only problem.....I have had 2 times when my anorexia got really bad....once at the age of about 45 & the other 7 years ago. I don't remember the first time as much as this time, but my hair was like straw for years afterward.....It's just been about the last year where the conditioners have started to really work & my hair can really feel soft after blow drying it.....no more straw hair which when frizzy gets even worse feeling.

I wear it up basically all the time with clips & combs that have cloth across them to hold both sides together & baretts to hold it up...just for a change of pace...get boared with the same kind & look of clips all the time......but can't really figure out much else to do with it. It's only been lately that I brave it & leave it down once in awhile. KY is so much more humidity than California....so the frizz is much worse here which is why I wear it up all the time when I go out anywhere......crazy because I hate short hair, yet I wear it up...not much difference....but I guess mentally there is for me (go figure????)......always had redish brown hair....sides are grey, back is still redish brown with a lot of grey in it.

I am a bit spoiled because my hair requires very little work. I have blonde, naturally curly hair that is shoulder length. I shower at night, put aveda confixer in my hair and go to sleep. In the morning it is curly without frizz. I use a water bottle and my fingers to tame it a bit in the morning and wa la, I am off.

Maybe try to commit yourself to styling it just once a week? I see how you are saying it's an asset you want to show off so I guess you shouldn't give up on it. So something like this idea has got to work! I plan to have mine specially braided for a formal event. Maybe once a month or so go in to have the hair dresser do it before you go out to dinner or if you have a formal event. Take pictures!!

Yes, I noticed this when I was inpatient with BPI but on a ward with two anorexic women who were fed through a nose tube: they did have straw hair. I remember it quite well. Their skin was also affected. It is a terrible disease.

When summer comes, I dye and cut my hair real short as winter comes I just leave it down. When I feel particularly bad I'll dye my hair and put make up on. If I have to go somewhere that requires a "human" color I'll dye my hair the day before. I wish I knew how to do more than just change the color or put it in a bun but I haven't work up the motivation either. I'm sending you all my motivation to help boost yours.

Thank you!

So I thought, the problem was just dexterity, but no, another problem was within the brain. Read on.

I have an unusual intelligence profile. My verbal intelligence is a whole lot higher than non-verbal intelligence. Only 3% of the population exhibit such a difference - usually, people's intelligences are bulked up together more. They are not so spread out.

So every once in a while my conditioner stays in my hair. It is embarrassing. It happened again last week - I noticed it at work, to my severe embarrassment. Yet, I spend a long time washing the conditioner out of the hair.

Finally, I debugged the problem. My shower head is really low (as if for a child) and the water hits my neck. Standing for a long time does not help because the water keeps hitting my neck, without washing the conditioner off the top of my head. I have to squeeze myself under the shower head (in a very uncomfortable position, but what can I do?) for the water to hit the top of the head.

You'd think I have lived in this apartment for a month and have not figured out all its ins and outs. No... since Feb 2010!

I am clearly challenged when it comes to non-verbal intelligence.
Thanks for this!

My p-doc noticed my hair. He said that Depakote, besides causing weight gain (as in me), often causes hair thinning, but obviously this is not my case.

At least something is good...

Wow, this I did not know. Will add depakote to my no-no list. I already have WAY too little hair, an am trying to figure out how to thicken it, without going the route of buying some brazillian girls hair for extentions!

Hair? I remember hair, grows out of your head and body right? In 1986 I lost all the hair on my body. I used to have a minimal amount of body hair and a decent set of locks. Well 5 years later it came back. Heavy on the body a sparsely on the top. In fact if I get a buzz cut the pattern of hair on scalp would resemble the craters of the moon. I haven't shaved yet as I don't have to comb over, and since it is grey/blondish it isn't obvious against a lily white scalp.

Hi hamster-bamster, I'm an admirer from afar. Your culinary expertise caught my eye one day and I've been following your posts ever since.

I take Lithobid and I believe that's why my hair has thinned. Just thought I'd throw my penny in.

Nice to "formally" meet you!

My hair is very straw like.. anorexia, hmm probably due to that, I use tons and tons of conditioner.

Now I am soooo jealous! Can I please has all your guys's curls and waves???

My hair is very straight, baby fine. I'm pretty lazy with my hair too, I'll find a few ways to style it and then just stick to those few for quite a while. I used to work as a hair dresser and I remember other stylists raving about a product called Nioxin, for thinning hair. I have not used it but I remember how much they all loved this product.
