I'm having the same problem, except I use hot baths as a self-soothing tool, and so some days I'll bathe 3 times but other times I'll go 4-5 days without bathing at all.
Thanks for this!

I have the same problems. When im depressed I can go a week or longer without taking a shower. Usually my roomie tells me I stink and that's usually when I go take a shower. I'm too fat for a bath, might overflow the bathtub lol.

I only have a shower. Oh, how I wish I had a bathtub. I'd be squeeky clean. There's nothing like a hot tub of water to soothe your woes.

I've been laying in bed an hour & a half, trying to get motivated to shower & get to work. I must i must I must! But how... It is soooo cold... And I don't see the point, I've got all sort of excuses, I don't have time now, my hair will be wet, I won't smell bad if I just use deodorant, no one will know, even if they do they won't be mean about it cuz I'm the boss and I'm good to them, and the final one - I don't care!

But then again I know it's unsanitary. I will look more professional at the office. I may feel more refreshed. I may feel proud of myself for a small (but huge) victory. I can do this I can do this I must i must!

If I had a decent bath tub that would be more appealing... So nurturing & soothing & gentle.

I've been interested in the light box - want to look into that more. They sound expensive, maybe insurance would cover it? Sounds like a possibly good natural thing (except for the electricity which requires oil to run the giant generators - I'm pretty negative lately - sorry). But I know I prefer warm sunshine days to this cold crap.

And I need to go get the darned vitamin D shot already. I hate being a procrastinator. I want mindfulness therapy again. . *stomps feet in bed & procrastinates some more & wishes I had a remote to open curtains*

I feel like a weak loser can't even shower. But neither can you all posting here, and I love you guys, you're not weak nor losers. So logically, I should be as kind & gentle in my self talk. But probably I will have to yell at myself to make it happen.

Stinky group hugs (it's safe over internet lol)

coco,i feel ya.
it's just a difficult for me....when i'm down - it's disgusting how allergic i can become to water
AND I'M NOT A DIRTY PERSON, my house is spotless!!!

just, sometimes.....i can't explain it.
there have been times my husband has picked me up and put me in there. not cause i stunk, but because "it's what a person is supposed to do".
have to admit once the initial awfulness of water on skin goes away, it feels quite good....have to crank up the heat, and sit in there and chainsmoke till the water runs cold....

something in ours brains i think. low dopamine. makes water repulsive.

I completely forgot about my newest tool! Perfume - eau de toilette or eau de parfum. A few months ago I sort of realized that I could go back to using perfume (my ex 2nd H could not tolerate the smell of perfume, and over the many years together, I sort of got used to it, forgetting how much I like scents.

So I got "old" perfumes that are inexpensive at Target, Ross, and TJMaxx. Not only because they are inexpensive, but also because I wanted that vintage scent, such as Red Door - I did not want a perfume by a modern pop star. So I now have a collection which I display on a shelf in the bathroom, and applying perfume after a shower (first deciding which one) REALLY picks me up. And, that is something to look forward to, as a prize for showering and especially conditioning.

Perfumes last forever, so it is a small investment considering the returns.

I run into this issue a lot when I am low. I never have the energy after work to take a shower and in the morning it seems pointless with it being so cold. I have never had anyone say anything about it until recently when my new boss goes " your hair looks lighter did you dye it or something" and all I had done was shower >< even after that embarrassment I still have trouble. Reading through this thread I think that rewards may be the right way to go. My hair has gotten to the point where I have to braid it so it doesn't tangle so I've decided that I'm going to set a schedule where I shower every other afternoon and when I'm out of the shower I will put my hair up in curlers. See I always wanted curly hair but never had the guts to perm it so this will be a win:win. I get to have curly hair and I have a schedule that will help me keep up these hygiene practices.

No matter how down I might feel, I can't remain unshowered. It actually relaxes me.

I shower, but do not enjoy it like alot of people. I don't think I like the feeling of water on my skin.

I have this exact problem too. I find it so strange that so many of us do. I'm actually on the boards right now because I'm procrastinating because I don't want to shower (it's been three days). I'm so annoying.

Oh goodness I can relate. When I'm depressed the last thing I feel like doing is looking after personal hygiene. I'd rather walk around in pjs with messy hair all day. Rest assured it doesn't last forever though.

I understand your pain! Sometimes I find it so difficult to shower but sometimes you gotta just push yourself, because I feel so good after a shower...even if it is just crawling back into my PJS! My showers have gotten better but I struggled bad a few months ago, and this time of year is depressing! I am ready for the time to change and the days to be longer...getting dark early sucks!

Not just any vitamin D, it has to be D3, and it needs to be at least 2,000 I.U. daily. I take 5,000 I.U. daily. Furthermore, vitamin D3 has a very long half life (21 days for oral D3 supplements), it will take another three months before you reach peak serum concentrations. Additionally, it takes about ten days for your body to process vitamin D3 into its active metabolite.

Not knowing any details about you, the most I would recommend is a loading dose of 8,000 I.U. daily for one month, and then 4,000 I.U. daily thereafter. Have your doctor check your calcifediol (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) and calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol) levels in three months.

I would also add NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine). The reason for this is the active metabolite of vitamin D3, calcitriol, is an astrocyte glutathione catalyst. I believe D3's ability to increase neural glutathione is its principal mechanism of action, and cysteine is usually the rate limiting factor in glutathione production. NAC provides a source of cysteine, try 1200 mg daily for a month. Cysteine also participates in the NMDA system, NMDA receptor dysfunction is believed to be responsible for a number of negative symptoms in bipolar, schizoaffective, and schizophrenia like disorders. i.e. depressive, avolition type symptoms.
