Poor Carrie was doing a stand up show on a holland cruise line to the carribean. She started slurring, talking incoherently, and her dog took 2 dumps on the stage and peed. She reportedly chased ppl who walked out, and everyone accused her of being drunk/a hot mess/on drugs.

She was hospitalized and had her medication changed. My heart goes out to her and I hope she is better soon

I feel awful for her. At least when you or I have a "bipolar moment", we get to do it in the relative privacy among our families and/or friends.....NOT in front of a crowd of strangers, on TV or in the middle of a performance.

I don't think I could be a celebrity and have bipolar disorder---too many ways to embarrass yourself and wind up being a punchline in one of David Letterman's monologues.

I agree Bp nurse! And I would bet the stress of having to be in the public eye causes mania. It makes me mad how so many concluded she was just messed up on alcohol. But she was very public about abuse in the book Wishful Drinking she is also well known as a p
Bipolar. So much of the public has no clue what mania can do to a person!

On the news when the country singer Mindy ? Shot the dog then herself in Heber Springs Arkansas doctors threw around the diagnosis bipolar. Great, now people who watched that have yet another misconception of how "bipolar's" are as a whole.

Saw the video and she didn't seem all that to me. Actually she kept her sarcastic self depreciating humor intact. She is a BP hardcore veteran, don't think this hyped incident phased her a bit. Anyway, she has admitted she'll be back as Princess Leia in Star Wars 7! See that interview here, it's funny, classic Carrie.

on TMZ people said this?!

"Bipolar is not a disease. It is just an excuse for people, who do not know how to act around other people, to act like a$$e$."

"There are people who have real bipolar conditions but also many who don't and are told they do by incompetent doctors and given pills they don't need, it's also become an excuse for some, particularly stars and celebrities when they do something the public decides they don't like, didn't seem that bad here"

wow man

This.... is infuriating.

Leave it to pop media to make such huge stigma statments and make fun of us.

I never even knew Carrie Fisher had BP. I hope she does come back for the next Star Wars film. That would be awesome.

She is an incredible woman. I read an interview with her in "Psychology Today" in late 90's. She was on 7 hardcore meds including zyprexa and others. But she has been a very productive person during her life. That part totally eludes me.

She had an incredible story. Hanging out with Belushi/Ackroyd, marrying Paul Simon, her OD. When she got out of the hospital after her OD she threw a party and put a cardboard cutout of Princess Leia on a gurney with tubes stuck in it at the front door. What a sense of humor.

I also saw an interview with a male Soap Opera actor in mid-2000's who has BP. He told the interviewer, "It's not a death sentence". That totally confuses me, as well.

It's the idea that if you let it drag you down, it will. If you come out with the attitude that you won't let it beat you, then it won't. I watched my mom do the same thing to cancer. It was a death sentance, physcially, but mentally she battled it. Instead of living only 2 years, she lived 11. She refused to give up without a fight. Me too.

I read Carrie Fisher's autobiography, and it was a great book. She didn't sugarcoat any part of her life and she shared more than I ever could. I know her world is completely different from most of ours, but in much of her story I could relate.
I haven't seen the press except for what was shared here. I hope she is doing well after the incident.

It's hard to say, since all we know of her is through the media really.

I know Lark Voorhies who played Lisa on Saved by the Bell t.v. show has bipolar. And it's pretty sever, like it seems like it is difficult for her to work due to it and she appears to have psychosis. But, it's all through the media so perhaps it's all just exagerated to make a good story.

i read 3 sources that said she had schizoaffective disorder though? one or two of them quoted her mom saying schizoaffective i believe.

i remember seeing an interview with her and she was mumbling under her breath constantly and the reporter asked who she was talking to.

Oh, see, I was wondering about that! Thanks!

Yes, I remember the mumbling under the breath thing and then she said she was praying and very spiritual. That's what I mean if maybe they exagerate. Maybe she was praying. And if not, well, that's okay too and I think that's the issue that gets missed. So she is talking to her voices. Oh well, she's dealing with it so that's what matters.
