I have the obvious down- tell the truth, no exaggeration, etc, but how do I make sure I get heard?

When you get there and sit down, briefly tell him you need help and have had some problems in the past explaining how you feel When speaking to a pdoc ( its okay for them to see you nervous. Then look at the doctor, If he is busy scribbling notes ,stop talking until he looks up, continue.

You mean your father going with you ? If so just ask him to let you see the doctor alone,the doctor will insist he leave knowing you want to be able to speak freely.
You are over 18 ( I think  ) so no legal reason for him to be in the Pdoc's office.Remember this is about YOU getting help YOU need to enjoy your life and feel good... It's YOUR time

You can still be on your own with the Pdoc.. 17 Is certainly old enough to seek medical care with out your dad sitting there

I would ask your dad to please wait in the waiting room so that you could be the most honest with the psychiatrist. Tell your dad you don't know what questions the psychiatrist may ask and you don't want to be embarrassed by answering truthfully in front of your dad. that you may feel more pressure to lie if you're in the room with you.
