This is a topic I've never seen on here, but caught myself doing this yet again and am wondering if others do too.

Do you find yourself choosing or rejecting something based on its association with a particularly strong mood state? Example: Grabbing a shirt in the morning and stopping short, realizing that that was the shirt you were wearing on a recent strongly sui day, thinking.... hmmm, better not. Then choosing another. Because you really need to have a good day, and don't want to chance it.

This could take all kinds of different forms (a route to travel, a place, a food, an action outside of routine that you did or didn't do that particular day...) Or it might be driven by the opposite, where you view something as "lucky" because of its association.

It's certainly not a "bipolar thing", but, just curious...Is this something you find yourself doing??

(Incidentally, I don't pay mind to the "standard" superstitions, though I do heed certain routines/avoidances from my OCD.)

haha yeah - I've got some clothes (usually newer) clothes... that I actually will wear when I'm depressed because I am hoping that I'll think I look ok and maybe cheer up.

But other than that I can't think of any superstitious habits off hand.

I don't really have any clothes that have negative or especially good associations. I do find that when I feel good, I put on nice clothes and makeup. When I don't feel good, I wear sweats and no makeup. I guess everybody does that.

definitely IZ...

I am very afraid to interrupt my routines for fear that I immediately won't recognise what follows and collapse in a heap!

I have hundreds of clothes but I only wear about 3

I curiously don't trust the human who might occupy those 97

I drive very fussy and stick to my patterns

I believe that james driving a different street will collide inexplicably with something someone

a mess in my apartment will most certainly bring about my total destruction

it's a limited living system and I know it's my OCD too

superstition suggests imminent pain
I don't know who put the "super" in it...?

'stition' is fine by me

but I make it super by trusting it will exceed sneakiness and meet me in places I am not prepared for

I think it's just habits?

and personal habits are ok they help us organise in this massive expanse of life
Thanks for this!

I have been inpatient 3 times and each blasted time I had on this blue shirt long sleeve with thumb loops when I went all goofy .. The 3rd visit there I asked one of the mental health techs that I knew and trusted to please take the shirt and burn it ! She did and I haven't gone back sense .. LOL

I'm assuming this topic is not limited to clothes by the title. I catch myself doing silly superstitious stuff some times but not with clothes. For example, I prefer even numbers for some strange reason. I was thrilled when my wife had twins! I will avoid walking under a ladder even tho I know it's bunk (but just in case right). When my nose itches my aunt use to tell me I was going to get in to a fight or argument with some one. And I always remember that when my nose itches. When my hand is itchy I'm suppose to come in to money. I have debunked that one many times! But I still wonder some times.

Me too! I tend to buy things in quantities of either 2 or 4...canned food, shampoo, toothpaste, etc, even if I only need one.

I tend to avoid the elevator at work on high anxiety days, not because I've been stuck in it, but because there's the possibility of being stuck in it.

I'm not sure this qualifies as superstition but I always feel a weird association with coincidences, like they are supposed to mean something. Like looking up at the clock from doing something and its 12:34 or talking about a song or singing it in my head and I turn on the radio and that song is on. I used to drive on a certain bridge and some of the streetlights would go out as I passed, I used to think I caused that. I deja vu a lot. Maybe these are just quirks?

I am not superstitious but I set fire to and burned the shirt I was wearing the day my BF died. I associated the shirt with that day and I wanted it gone.

As a person who very much likes to think he values reason and doesn't believe in fairy tales of any sort- I still find myself knocking on wood (though that may just a turn of phrase) and things like that. Especially if I'm 'up'. When 'up' on a payday walking past the scratch off machine is often too much for me. And even though I know, statistically, any place for lottery has the same terrible odds, I still feel driven to go back to that machine if I win or spend the money elsewhere if I lose.

Go figure.

Anyway, yes, as much as it goes entirely against my worldview, I find myself acting irrationally and doing superstitious stuff, cause "hey, it can't hurt." Haha.
