Going to switch from my 15yr use of Depakote to Topamax. Anyone want to share their triumps and pitfalls?

I was on Topomax for over a year and what it did for my mood was AWESOME! I felt great. And this could be either good or bad. It was good for me. I've never lost so much weight so quickly. As soon as I got off the med it went right back but it was nice for a time. The reason I got off of it was because I was having memory problems which can sometimes be a side effect. My doctor told me but I forgot. Go figure. The memory loss wasn't permenant though and I'm thinking about asking my doc if I can go back on it soon. Overall, it was a very good med. Good luck with it!

I took it for a few months a couple of years ago but don't remember how it worked for me then as that time is all foggy. I tried it again recently and only made it a week before the side effects bugged me so much I quit and swore off all meds. I'm considering Lamictal, but still going without meds for now.

The thing I liked about Topamax was that it helped keep me from getting too wired. I didn't like the brain fog, daytime sleepiness, and the really odd perception of time that I got from it (sometimes 5 minutes would seem like an hour, sometimes an hour would seem like 5 minutes - in a really bizarre way, not a lost track of time way). It was like watching the world from another planet. I'm told those side effects may go away after awhile, but I'm very impatient (especially when I'm manic Who here's got Topomax

I hear lots of people really dig the weight loss part, too. I was worried about it, but didn't take it long enough to see if it was an issue for me.

Good luck.

I've been on topamax for 11 months and I love it. I lost 25 pounds rather quickly. It really leveled my mood swings. I do experience a little trouble with word retreival every now and then. It doesn't bother me though because it's usualy just around family.
I hope it works well for you.
