I had post postpartum depression and called my ob doc a week after my son was born. I told him I was feeling very depressed. He said, "that is normal, drink a beer". (I didn't drink the beer) Two days after that conversation I attempted suicide.

I had a PSYCHIATRIST tell me one time, "If you would just get a job and learn how to drive, you wouldn't have depression and anxiety." REALLY???? I had these problems when I was working, and even, more so, which is why I don't work OR drive!

Some time later, when I started seeing someone else, at the intake one the things they asked me was if I had been seeing someone else before, I said yes. They asked me what he said about my situation, and I told them just what he had said--that was written down in my records and the SSD judge got wind of it and that was used against me.

Oh that **** especially pisses me off. Like my life is fine, I'm happy with how my life is, but if i'm still depressed all the time then maybe something in my head is wrong?? like really...

I have to say I am kind of surprised by how much religion is mentioned here! I think I would slap someone in the face if they told me any of my problems were a result of a religious shortcoming, even if I was totally stable!

That is a load of crap!!! Basically he is saying you're a great candidate for employment. Ugh! I worry bc the panel of Dr's and staff reviewed my prognosis and believe I'll be up and ready to work in the future. So, I get a third review in 3 yrs. I'm on a handful of meds and 3 mental illnesses have been added to my initial claim of bipolar I. The parameters of disability are bs because we meet those guidelines! I mean how much proof do they need seriously?! It's obvious they're not following the definition of mental health that falls under the disability criteria.

One of the worst lines I got was from SS: " You just need to find a low-stress job." Don't we all???

One that comes from people who mean well (and thus I normally don't say anything) is "You're perfect the way you are." That's nice but I would really hate to see what I'm like when I'm imperfect.

That makes it even worse when a psychologist or psychiatrist says something like that (like in my case when a pdoc told me the only reason I was depressed was because I didn't drive or have a job!). I mean, if you don't believe that mental illness is real, then what the h**l are you doing in this business!

My ignorant MIL said that once. Thank God she lives thousands of miles away and I rarely talk to her!

My aunt noticed that when I was manic I did a lot of walking. So when I hit depression she suggested that I should walk because it must have been the walking that was making me happy. Sigh!

My ex significant other saying he will be there for me, but when I point out that its all just words, he says he can't believe I put this on him because of what he went through losing his mom recently. He then said I have family (not close) lean on them. Very supportive huh.

Being told that i should know better/be better because I am a nurse. For example, that i shouldn't ever consider going off meds because i would be risking my career.

One time, in my earlier stages of waiting for disability, I called SS to check how my case was progressing. Part way into the conversation, he said, "But you're not REALLY depressed." I said, "Yes, I am." "But you haven't been diagnosed, though, have you?" "Yes, I have." "But not recently, though, right? I mean if it hasn't been recent, then you're not depressed."

A slightly different twist...
I used to work full-time. When I decided that the stress was causing me to forget things, make mistakes, etc., I told my boss that I was quitting because I was bipolar. His response: "You're not going to kill me, are you?"

Good point.
In my experience, there is no "choice", such as "choose to be happy".
It is not so much a feeling or emotion that I struggle with,
as it is rather ... some cemented state of being that won't budge!

So in the midst of this my mom agrees to take me to the ER, I tell her I feel like someone is taking over my brain, her mind clicks OH must be SATAN. Before she takes me to the ER she takes me to her church to see her psycho pastor (bought a new motorcycle because god told him to) and he promises me if I jut accept Jesus into my heart the devil will be vanquished and I won't need meds or the hospital. He said Jesus was standing right next to me, and the devil was too.

Needless to say I declined. I went to hospital and got medication.

By the way I was very religious at one point in my life but I still had problems so I think my mom's "it's the devil!" Theory is a little outdated.

Also totally off topic but I am 27 years old and can't watch/read Harry potter because according to her the devil travels through Harry potter and every time I was hospitized I was reading Harry potter right before. Which is unequivocally untrue.
"Pastor, why is it that one God talks to you, this is called a delusion, but when you talk to God, this is called a prayer? " except that your pastor with his motorcycle would then need to be called delusional...

To sum up, "I would highly appreciate if you refrain from giving me advice that is both unsolicited and uninformed" should work well with lay people, and "What Board regulates your professional activities? " should work well with psych clinicians, but nothing verbal is going to work if you are denied SSDI due to something like that - then you need an aggressive litigator.

when people say, "I almost killed myself yesterday, I worked so hard."

Yeah this just happened a day ago and I immediately flew of the handle...maybe I overreacted, maybe I didn't. But it did make me angry fast.

I mean really? You almost killed yourself because you had a little extra work to do? Shut up now before you get to worked up and kill yourself over a heart attack from getting out of your chair!
