I began to have a fine hand tremor on Zyprexa and Vistaril. I stopped Zyprexa and Vistaril hoping the tremor would go away. The hand tremor was still there after stopping and being on nothing. I'm now on Depakote, Seroquel, Cogentin and Propanalol. I have heard Propanolol takes 8 days to kick in. Do you know anyone who has a permanent tremor from psych meds that did not go away with time?

I got hand tremor from lithium. I didn't notice until like 4 months of taking it. If I point with my left hand it shakes, hold a glass with my left it shakes. I didn't sweat it, it went away.

I have tremor, it's been there for quite a while. I've been on so many different meds and take quite a few so I can't pinpoint which one it is. I just deal with it.

I have what appears to be a permanent hand tremor due to my med history. For a great while it was terrible, and sometimes parkinsonian in magnitude. Some meds were changed around. Now I only have the tremor when I am agitated.
What is interesting is the neurologist diagnosed me with a moderate essential tremor, essential meaning they do not have a clue what is causing it. He placed me on high doses of Propranolol which helped me to get dizzy and pass out a few times. He told me I will eventually need brain surgery. I then ignored him. I switched to Primidone with the help of my pdoc. This helped allot. The switch of my other meds allowed me to get off of Primidone. As an interesting part of this saga of mine, my dizziness was blamed on orthostatic hypotension by my cardiologist. I did not believe him. I thought it must be my meds. I went through two other cardiologists before one thought my meds may be causing my dizziness. So after another change in meds with my pdoc, these symptoms also disappeared. I tell you, I believe some of these doctors should not have their license to practice medicine when something brain-dead simple is overlooked, even by multiple doctors. Between this and problems finding a pdoc that actually knows what he is doing and willing to work with me at the same time, it is a wonder I am able to function as well as I am. It has taken ten years to get this far. And I am lucky I am on disability with a program that pays for all my meds and my pdoc visits. Otherwise I would be SOL. Sorry for the rant. ![]()

Marshellette,
If the tremor is from Depakote, the only way to have it eventually go away is to stop Depakote. Propranolol, Cogentin etc. are antidotes to tremor caused by antipsychotics Meds, not anticonvulsants. My tremor on Depakote was downright horrible - way worse than what my elderly grandma got post stroke. Luckily, it did go away, but not the very second I stopped Depakote |

The only med I've ever taken that caused a hand tremor in me was Depakote. It was so bad I could hardly get food to my mouth. But as Hamster-Bamster said, it went away once I stopped Depakote. So, maybe Depakote is now the culprit.
I know people can get tardive dyskinesia which can be permanent from taking antipsychotic meds. |

I've noticed some hand tremors since last fall, when I've been on Zyprexa more than I've been off of it. They're worse when I'm really tired, or when I try to do some fine motor skill, like applying mascara. Needless to say, I'm not thrilled with this development, but unfortunately I seem to need 2 APs at this point in my life to deal with my symptoms.

Its been 2 years without meds and while its improved drastically (its no longer parkinsonian and I have regained fine motor skills) my tremor is still noticable at times.

Like emom, I have a hand tremor, but I don't really know what med to pin it on or if it's just anxiety. It makes my handwriting really sloppy now and sometimes my hand shakes when I life a fork or spoon to my mouth. It's been going on for several months. The way I look at it, there could be worse things but I understand your concern.

This may not be the same but when I was 14 I was put on Zoloft because they thought I was depressed. I developed a complex motor tic disorder and most doctors haven't seen anything like it before. When I am anxious I experience a wide variety of tics, some vocal, and sometimes my whole body convulses and look like I am being electrocuted or having a seizure. I was taken off Zoloft immediately but 12 years later I still have it. :/ It may be because I was so young at the time. But it is manageable.
