I haven't been officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder (or any mood disorder) but I feel like something is majorly off with the way my mood fluctuates. Multiple times a day I have mood swings. I can go from depressed and angry to very excited and happy. Usually when I'm on a high, I find it difficult to concentrate and go from one thing to the other with no explanation.
I really want my p doc to take notice to my mood. She has never even really asked if I have any problems with my mood. She is more concerned with my safety and my psychosis.
I have 2 family members with bipolar disorder and I once had someone with bipolar disorder tell me that she thought I had the disorder too.

How do I get my p doc to notice what is going on without sounding like I want attention?

I would tell your pdoc that you're struggling and explain why. tell them everything you're feeling. I spent years holding back which resulted in years of suffering for me and those around me. you deserve to be happy so you should grab the reins and take control. If you're pdoc is unwilling to listen maybe you should find a dr that will. They're job is to help you and they can't do that if they won't even take the time to listen.
Thanks for this!

Right now your DX is psychosis-nos, anorexia and odd correct? psychosis-nos, maybe your doctor looking into schizo affective disorder. I would ask if you have scizo affective disorder: bipolar type. If not why? NOS is usually but not always a place holder until the pdoc gets to know your true symptoms. How long have you seen this pdoc?

Bipolar nurse how long did you have NOS lqble?

Yeah I have been thinking about asking my p doc what psychotic disorder she thinks I have. I think that will help me a lot with my recovery. But I don't think that my mood and my psychosis have anything related to them. They aren't affected by one another. That's why I don't think I have schizoaffective disorder.
I have been seeing the pdoc for 1 year.

The mood and psychosis not being affected by one another actually CAN be schizoaffective. In schizoaffective there are mood symptoms and psychotic symptoms but they operate independently of one another, as opposed to bipolar or depression with psychotic features, where the psychosis occurs only during mood episodes.

Okay that makes sense. I guess I feel like attention seeking because I have brought up the idea of bipolar with my pdoc and she basically shot it down, saying that I don't have it. I feel like no one will take me seriously if I bring it up.
And how long do you need to have symptoms before you are diagnosed??

You can get diagnosed pretty much right away. The symptoms must be present at least 2 weeks for a major depressive episode, and 4 days or any length of time if hospitalization is required for a hypomanic or manic episode.

Instead of specifically mentioning biploar with pdoc, another possibility might be to phrase it the way you said in your first post:

I feel like something is majorly off with the way my mood fluctuates.
Thanks for this!

Allot can be accomplished by how you phrase things in your conversation with others. I did find out that I had to do this with my proc which helped lead him to a good diagnosis. And he felt it was his idea. This is the important part.

THERE ARE BAD PSYCHIATRISTS - who misdiagnose, underdiagnosed, and fail to practice psychiatry up to the standards expected by the AMA and its affiliates. GET A SECOND OPINION - from a reputable psychiatrist who has no connections whatsoever to your current doctor. As things stand now - I think you're being taken on a Missouri Boat Ride.

I have nothing against my psychiatrist through. She has diagnosed me with other stuff and she was the only one who actually acknowledged my psychosis as something real. I am not leaving her.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

If she says something like Are you saying that you have bipolar disorder?, You're not bipolar, etc., you could reply

I know that I can't diagnose myself. It's just that these mood swings really bother me, and I am hoping that you can help with them.

Psychiatrists make mistakes or fail to recognize the patient's descriptions of their symptoms. For over a decade, I had the sole diagnosis of chronic clinical depression, but it wasn't until I had my first thorough psychiatric evaluation by a different psychiatrist, that the truth came out (i.e. type 1 bipolar disorder). Now, many years later, an entirely new pdoc has added the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder (formerly: multiple personality disorder). So, you ask if you can have BP? Certainly it's possible - and where you mention your relatives with this illness, the probability of your inheriting this delightful condition is many magnitudes higher. So, it certainly deserves further investigation, and a second opinion never hurts.

Besides my usual psychiatrist, I have had 2 other ones in inpatient. One of them completely disregarded my symptoms and the other one that I had a mood disorder and a psychotic disorder and wanted to put me on olanzapine.
The thing is I see my pdoc through outpatient services so it doesn't cost me money and I don't know how to het a different pdoc for the clinic.
