Started Serequel a week ago and have already gained 6 lbs. I've worked very hard to lose 100 lbs. This ****** disorder has taken away enough of my hard work to wellness, I'm not going to let take away anymore of my self - confidence. Very angry this morning. I have 2 choices, stop the psych meds and go crazy or stay on them and starve myself. Anyone have any suggestions on how to control my weight with psych meds?

Did your T give you a specific diet? Probably fruits and vegetables and a balanced diet could help you keep that weight off.

As far as I know seroquel is one of the newer antipsychotics so the side effects are not supposed to be so bad. I think if you can give it a bit longer, the side effects will settle down but please consult with your psychiatrist, he may have other ideas.

You have 3rd choice. There are meds that are not made of calories.

Geodon is called Zeldox in Canada. You can ask your pdoc for Mirapex. It's used off label to prevent weight gain from APs. Your pdoc may not have heard of this use though. I am 5'10". I went from 118 lbs. at first diag. to 150 on lithium. Changed to Paxil due to lithium damaging my liver. 5 years of switching meds, got on combo that works for me. I suffer severe manias/insomnia which cause hallucinations. So am on Depakote & Seroquel. Only seroqel has helped me sleep more than 4 hours/night. I gained 45 lbs. on seroquel. So am frustrated about the weight gain. I cut out pork/bacon, eat lots of fruits & veggies. I do yoga, walk 20-30 min/day (more on weekends) climb mountains. I never sit longer than 30 min. at a time. Do sit ups. Still, the weight gain. My readings are all good (BP 120/65, HDL/LDL normal, glycemic index good) so MD told me to stop worrying about the weight. But it's annoying, especially when I used to be so skinny before meds!!! But I would not want to go back to the speed-racing thoughts, nonstop talking, climbing trees in my dresses & high heels to reach the moon & hearing trees tell me what to do----so will stay on meds. I pray every day that scientists will find meds that do Not promote weight gain. (BTW, when I was skinny, I was sick all the time---strep throat, bronchitis, high fevers. Am rarely sick since I went on the meds!)

I had gained 40 lbs on Depakote. I was on Seroquel for several years and could not lose the weight. I had changed my eating habits drastically. I recently came off the Seroquel and have already lost 18 lbs in two months. I had to come off of the Seroquel because the medicine caused me to be pre-diabetic which I am now on medicine for, and my triglycerides went thru the roof. Coming off of the Seroquel was the worst withdrawals I have ever had. I went thru hell for over a month, several days I was lying on the couch shaking and then I would sweat and then be cold. This stuff is potent in my opinion. I will never go on this medicine again.

I was on Abilify for awhile and It just wasn't working for me and my family doc took me off it cold turkey, I went into a psychotic state because of it, so I can relate to your story and will never allow any doctor to take stop a psych med again without tapering it. Thank you for sharing __________________ The struggle you're in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow Don't give up |

I thought Mirapex sounded familiar and realized that I'm already on it, I'm so use to the generic name. i take 1 mg HS for RLS. Do you think I would need to increase this dose? What is your experience with it?

No, you are already on lots. It may not work for you for weight gain if you are still gaining. I've been on it with a bunch of different APs, including seroquel and zyprexa, and i didn't gain weight. I don't know for sure if it's the mirapex, but i don't want to stop it to find out, even though saphris, which i'm on now, is supposed to be weight neutral
