My pdoc wants me to try Seroquel again. It worked for me in the past, but caused a 35 lb weight gain. I was also on Paxil and Abilify at the time.
Right now, doc has me off of everything except Klonopin, since I'm going through a nasty response to an AD. Any suggestions? The weight gain possibility scares me to death, but I can't go on like I have been.

I've heard that Paxil is also a weight gainer. My doctor is tapering me OFF of Seroquel at the moment specifically because of the weight gain. In the last 3 or 4 months I've gained about 25-30 pounds.
I've heard that Seroquel (and other AP's) affect not only your appatite, but your metabolism as well, which is why weight gain is almost a guarantee. You'd have to keep an extremely strict workout/eating regime in order to keep the weight off. I'm sure it's possible, but I personally simply didn't have the time needed to devote to it. I'm kind of scared to go off of it myself. I've already noticed a difference in the last few days where I seem to be talking to myself a lot more (something I haven't done since I started Seroquel) and I've just been getting more and more of a feeling of un-ease that was also really common pre-Seroquel.

This time around I'm really worried about weight gain. Not long ago when I was more stable I lost 100 lbs. There is absolutely NO WAY I'm gaining that weight back. Sometimes I think I'd rather be crazy. But realistically, I can't. So I'm just going to keep eating supper healthy and exercise. If the weight comes on, I guess it comes on but like the disorder itself, I will keep fighting.

I hate the weight gain. Before going on psych meds, I was 5'10" & from 118-125 lbs. Too skinny. I had wild energy (super manias) & could do 10 projects at once (at work) & dance 3 hours/night, hike, run etc. On the meds (Depakote for manias & seizures, Seroquel for insomnia/hallucinations), I gained 50 lbs. My doc told me not to worry about it, since my BP & other readings are normal (altho' both meds can elevate your glycemic index). I HATE the weight gain. I dance but do not have the energy to dance more than 15 min. at a time. I walk 20-30 min. 3-4/week (if weather is OK), I do yoga, sit ups, etc. & still am fat. I pray every day that scientists will figure out a psych med that does Not slow down your metabolism & cause major hunger!!

I just came off of the Seroquel because not only could I not lose the 40 lbs I gained with Depakote, and I had changed my eating habits for 2 years drastically, but also I am now pre-diabetic and my triglycerides went thru the roof. I will never go on Seroquel again. I think it has been two months and I have lost almost 20 lbs since being off of the Seroquel. I now take Haldol. So all in all, I had no luck with weight issues on the Seroquel. Oh and by the way, when I went from 400 mg to 800 mg on the Seroquel I gained 7 lbs in 2 weeks, so I had went back down to 400 mg and never lost that weight at the time.

Maybe it won't make you gain weight this time. From what I know, Paxil is a bit weight gain drug, so maybe it was that and not the Seroquel. I have been on Seroquel for about 2 years and it hasn't caused any weight gain whatsoever.
