Hi all,Doing lots of research on the positives and negatives between risperidone and seroquel for my 13 years old son. He struggles with sleep, hour on and off all night, depression, anger at the world which mostly comes out as extreme intolerance especially with authority figures (though he is not combative nor disrespectful) and delusions of extra abilities which make him feel superior.
Can anyone tell me about their experiences with children on either of these medications. Not abilify as we won't be able to afford that here in South Africa.
Also, anyone with experience of delusional bi-polar children? My son most definitely does NOT think what he's experiencing are delusions and I am wondering if he'll be able to recognize that they are clearly not reality once he's on medication.
Thanks for reading!

I thnk there was something about risperidone and adolescent boys. Something like it raised prolactin levels and made them develop breasts. I remember seeing one of those class action lawsuit commercials here in the US during daytime tv. I don't know any details, just that I saw that. I am female and was on risperidone for most of my adolescence and it did raise my prolactin. I started lactating, which was extremely humiliating and I never told anyone about it. I'm not sure why I was put on it in the first place so I can't say if it helped.

I have heard about the enlarged breast tissue in boys and that is a concern. Thanks for your input.

Okay, I went on Risperidone when I was 15 and was on it for a year. I didn't lactate but I did experience some slight growth in "that area" when I was generally a fit and healthy person. Luckily for me, this seemed to subside once I stopped taking the medication. From what I know, this is a less common side effect.

The next issue with Risperidone is the weight gain. At the end of the year taking it, I had gained over a stone. I also felt drowsy ALL the time and I mean literally constantly fatigued.

Quetiapine (Seroquel) I have found to be a lot kinder to my body and mind. I didn't experience much weight gain (I gained weight but that was because I started eating a lot more and generally exercised less). Even though I still felt slightly drowsy through the day, it had NOTHING on Risperidone.

I found both to be about as good at reducing psychotic symptoms and the Quetiapine did a pretty decent job at regulating my moods, also.

I like seroquel, I sleep like a rock, don't have racing thoughts, or paranoia until around diner (but I'm on a low dose) the risk with seroquel is weight gain, I'm constantly thirsty, ( meaning I probably drink over a gallon a day). It only has a 12 hr half life. My son took it too and no longer picked.

I wouldn't touch resparidon. Its half life is 21 hrs but both my husband and son had no reaction.

Risperdal didn't work for me psychosis wise and it made me sleep 20 hours a day(I wish I was exaggerating).

Seroquel was okay, but I still had mood swings and psychosis at times. I also gained a ton of weight. It did help me sleep though, so that was a plus.

Risperdone worked better for me for psychosis, but had weight gain although not as much as seroquel. Seroquel worked better for sleep, although I gained a ton of weight on it.

Seroquel was/is my saving grace. I only gained about 2-3 lbs on it. I was on risperdal for a few months and it didn't seem to do a thing for me.

I take both and the resperidone seems too work best for my paranoid delusions. Since they're in the same family class they don't like having you on both but they've tried taking me off of one or the other and it doesn't seem to work out all that well for me.

Thanks for the input. It's amazing that these drugs work so differently on different people. Well maybe not since we are all vastly different people.

I think there is better scientific evidence for risperidone than seroquel in youth, but that could just mean seroquel hasn't been researched as much. Even so, i would go with the evidenced based choice. But I think both have pros and cons.
