Hi, I just joined this forum today. I was wondering if you all could provide me with some ideas for coping strategies for dealing with Bipolar Disorder.

I am 21 and on medication, but I still feel like my emotions and behaviors are often out of my control. I feel like I turn into different people sometimes, I get angry at little things and take it out on the people I care about, I make bad and impulsive decisions... I struggle with both depression and mania, but mania has been a problem for me more recently. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm more on the depressive side of things, so I'm not sure about coping skills, but I wonder how long you have been on medication? Because sometimes it takes a while for meds to kick in. Also, if you are on any anti-depressants, many of those have a tendency to aggravate mania. I would check with your pdoc about this.

What is your support system like? Do you have family members or friends that you can turn to?

Sometimes when I have outbursts, I later realize that they have been building for a while. It helps to become aware of your moods. Two things that might help: mindfulness meditation and yoga. They can help you get more in tune with your emotions and the physical symptoms they cause. This can help you learn to slow down and breathe when you feel impulsive.

It sounds like you might need a tweek.in yr meds. I'm bp and rarely have episodes because of the right combo of meds...the episodes can sneak thru but hardly at all. It could be a number of things. Are you getting good nutrition and sleep? If I still had frequent issues with my illness the first place I'd start is with my pdoc. A good therapist is very important too. I wish you luck and welcome to the group!

Thank you all very much. To answer your questions, I have had trouble sleeping at night for the past few weeks. I am on Zoloft, but I have an appointment to talk with my dr. about alternative medications. I have a pretty good support system, my boyfriend is very supportive and willing to listen to me, but I hate that he has to deal with my crazy moods/behaviors. It's pretty unfair to him...

I will definitely look into meditation/yoga. Thanks again for your all's responses!

Do you take the Zoloft at night or in the morning? I was taking mine in the morning until my therapist suggested it would be more beneficial at night, since it's slightly sedating.

It's wonderful that you have a caring and supportive bf and others who care.

Take good care.
